Samsung's promotions ahead of the launch of the Galaxy S9 and S9+ promised "The Camera. Reimagined" – and boy did it deliver. The camera onboard the S9 and the even better S9+ have set a new benchmark. The S9+ was actually judged by DxOMark as having the world's best smartphone camera.

Samsung Galaxy S9 review: Incrementally better in all the right places

Samsung's Galaxy S9 is a strange breed of smartphone. With a Snapdragon 845 processor, great camera, and 18:9 screen, it has all the trappings of a fantastic 2018 handset. Yet, at the same time, it's remarkably similar to the Galaxy S8 that it replaces.

So far so good... but the bluetooth is questionable...

I upgraded from a Galaxy S3 to the S9. There is a lot to get used to but it is definitely an improvement. Except for the bluetooth. The bluetooth is inconsistent. It never automatically connects to my car like the S3 did. Often it takes several scans and selections before it connects.

Love it

I pre ordered this phone and I love it. I've changed from iPhone best bit is when you set the phone up it asks if you want to transfer just plug them in together with adaptor provided and 30 minutes later it was complete. Very impressed. Very user friendly and the camera is amazing!

In some ways, the Samsung Galaxy S9 is a serious step up from last year's flagship phone. In particular, its new 12-megapixel f/1.5 rear camera performs far better in low light than its predecessor. Its new Exynos 9810 processor also promises significantly faster performance.

Samsung hasn't made any drastic changes to the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ compared to their predecessors, and the company didn't really need to do much. Last year's design is still stunning, and now, it's a little more polished.

Despite being launched as a completely new generation, I'd say the Galaxy S9 itself is a transition model. It's more of an upgrade similar to the S-branded models in the iPhone family and which Samsung launched in order to buy more time until more substantial upgrades are ready. And this does make...

Taken as a whole, the Samsung Galaxy S9 is impressive. It is better overall than the S8, despite slightly weaker battery life and a rather odd implementation of its low-light camera algorithms.

Junk

Bought as upgrade/replacement for s7 edge that broke while travelling in europe. Battery life sucks, narrower body is awkward to use, lack of home button makes it more difficult to operate. On the plus side, the camera is a big step up for low light pictures but it's poor value for money.

Samsung's latest flagship is really good if you spend most of your time in Instagram feeds or creating content for the internet. For everything else the handset is just a marginal upgrade on last year's Galaxy S8 but you'll be pleased to know that the experience has been refined somewhat in a number...
