Panasonic Lumix TZ80 review: Can't Touch This

The Panasonic TZ range is hugely popular when it comes to dedicated compact cameras, especially if you're looking for big zoom in a relatively small package. In 2016 the range is diversifying: 2015's TZ70 is replaced by the similar TZ80 (or SZ60 for our American friends), as reviewed here, but...

Touchscreen controls added; 4K video capture; fast autofocus; 30x zoom versatility in pocketable body; image stabilisation; mode dial and lens control ring for easy adjustment and functionality

No tilt/vari-angle screen; lens limitations at full zoom in low-light; 4K/Post Focus mode fun but not must-buy features; autofocus slows a lot in low light

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ80

Announced at this year's CES, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ80 (also known as the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS60) features a 30x optical zoom (24-720mm equivalent) and is a replacement for last year's TZ70. It sits below the new TZ100 - last year's TZ57 has been discontinued and will not be replaced.

Panasonic Lumix TZ80 Review

The Panasonic Lumix TZ80, also known as the Lumix SZ60, is an update to the TZ70 , which is the number one seller in the Super Zoom Camera category, and the new TZ80 features a new 18 megapixel sensor, as well as the same 30x optical zoom lens, and electronic viewfinder.

4K video recording; 4K photo features; 4K live cropping; Post Focus technology; MicroUSB charging (instead of proprietary cable; Dual axis electronic level; Eye-detection sensor for EVF; 5-axis image stabilisation; Dual axis electronic level; Built in help; Customisable function buttons; 3inch...

Small EVF; Purple fringing; Post focus is better on larger sensor cameras

Panasonic TZ80 - pocket-sized but feature-packed

A pocket sized camera packed with useful features, but the TZ80's image quality lets it down.

Panasonic TZ80 review - pocket-sized but feature-packed

The TZ80 isn't short of attractive features, but disappointing image quality is hard to forgive from a camera that costs over £300. One thing it does well is to take photos of distant subjects in direct sunlight, but that's pretty niche.

Panasonic TZ80/SZ60 review

The TZ80 (unknown as the ZS60 in the US) is a replacement for last year's TZ70 (SZ50). However, Panasonic has a new camera to sit at the top of its travel line-up in the shape of the TZ100.

Panasonic Lumix TZ80 / ZS60 review

The Lumix TZ80 / ZS60 is the natural successor to the TZ70 / ZS50, the previous flagship travel zoom from Panasonic. Forgetting about the TZ100 / ZS100 for a moment, the TZ80 / ZS60 remains the obvious choice for those looking to pack an awesomely long zoom range into a pocketable format.

Perfection

I have had quite a few cameras over the years and this one is the best so far, the amount of things you can do with it is amazing and if you download the app you can take photos without touching the camera so definitely no camera shake

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ80 review

In 2006, Panasonic created what is now routinely referred to as the travel-zoom compact, with the release of the Lumix DMC-TZ1. At the time, this was the world's smallest compact with a stabilised 10x optical zoom. Ten years on and the Lumix TZ range remains hugely popular.
