The OnePlus 8 5G is one of the more affordable 5G phones on the market. But there are many more reasons why you should check it out.

Frame to frame without a hitch

The 6.55" Fluid AMOLED Display goes seamlessly from one frame to the next, while the 90Hz refresh rate means you can swipe, scroll and navigate with ease. The colours on the display are bright and vibrant, backed up by HDR10+ High Dynamic Range video technology. Rounding it all off is the dual stereo speakers and a cinematic 3D listening experience with Dolby Atmos support.

What a shot

You'll capture some great shots with the 48MP Triple Camera system. Perfect portraits and professional video footage with greatly improved stabilisation are easy to achieve. The 116-degree ultra-wide-angle camera lets you capture the most beautiful panoramas, and the new macro lens allows you to take close ups 'til your heart's content. For selfies, there's a good quality 16MP front camera.

Performance Plus in the OnePlus

The OnePlus 8 5G includes the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, which delivers up to 25% faster performance than previous generations. Meanwhile, you can transfer photos, videos and files in the blink of an eye with the UFS 3.0 file management system.

The power of 5G

With 5G you can connect to several networks at the same time giving you extended coverage and faster downloads. This means movie downloads in just seconds, near-instant photo sharing and network coverage like never before.  Because it automatically switches between 5G and non-5G networks, battery life is prolonged and your connection remains intact.

OnePlus 8 Onyx Black 8+128GB IN2010B review

There’s been little material advancement from the OnePlus 7T, however, with a camera that’s arguably a little worse, and all at a slightly more expensive price point. But with the addition of 5G and a slinky new design, the OnePlus 8 remains one of the very best phones you can buy for £600.
Pros:
  • Excellent 90Hz screen
  • Great performance
  • Appealing design
Cons:
  • Not as cheap as OnePlus phones used to be
  • Average camera

OnePlus 8 review

The OnePlus 8 sets the bar high for mid-priced flagships in 2020. While its design refinements borrow elements from other flagships, it's an undeniably sleek phone, with waterfall display edges and a punch-hole for the front-facing camera. With a Snapdragon 865 and up to 12GB of RAM, the phone is high-performance despite costing notably less than most flagships, making it the cheapest 5G phone in many markets.
Pros:
  • Affordable 5G connectivity
  • Impressive specs
  • Big 4,300mAh battery
Cons:
  • No telephoto camera
  • No wireless charging
  • Price hike over predecessor

OnePlus announced two new OnePlus phones in mid-April, the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro. At a $699 starting price, the OnePlus 8 is the least expensive 5G phone available today and only gives up a few things seen in the OnePlus 8 Pro.
Pros:
  • Support for low-band and mid-band 5G
  • 90 Hz display
  • Ample RAM and fast internal storage
  • Stunning color options
  • Responsive Oxygen OS UI
Cons:
  • No wireless charging
  • No water/dust resistant rating

OnePlus 8 Onyx Black 8+128GB IN2010B review

OnePlus gets over the 5G upgrade hump in style. The camera’s no better, it’s worse in one way, but we get a style upgrade and an only slight jump in cost.
Pros:
  • Excellent power and performance
  • 5G (and no massive price hike)
  • 2020 curves
Cons:
  • Camera not as versatile as last time around

OnePlus 8 review

You need to appreciate the cost of 5G to “get” the OnePlus 8. It may seem like everyone has been blathering on about 5G for ages, but the phone hardware that makes it possible is still barely out of nappies. And that means it costs a bit to pack in. However, OnePlus has clearly tried its hardest to keep that extra cost to a minimum. £50 extra for 5G is a bit of a bargain. In other respects, outside a bit of curved glass here, a new processor there, the OnePlus 8 doesn’t seem a big improvement over the OnePlus 7T. But when many 5G phones are as effective wallet-drainers as Western Union email scams, we’re going to chalk this one up as a win.
Pros:
  • Excellent power and performance
  • 5G (and no massive price hike)
  • 2020 curves
Cons:
  • Camera not as versatile as last time around
