Olympus E-30
Filling the gap between the Olympus E-520 and pro-level E-3, the Olympus E-30 is a mid-range DSLR, aimed at advanced amateur and semipro photographers. This puts it squarely in the firing line of the revered Nikon D300, feature-packed Sony Alpha 700 and the well-specced Canon EOS 50D.

Olympus E-30
Targeted towards enthusiasts, high-level amateurs and photo hobbyists, the E-30 finally fills the hole in the Olympus dSLR line-up between the entry-level E-420 and E-520 cameras, and the high-end, professional E-3 . For the body only, expect to pay a price of AU$1,799.
Pros:
- Art filters are great fun
- Support for multiple exposures
- New 14-54mm kit lens is good
- Image quality is consistent
Cons:
- Live view is frequently laggy
- Antiquated menu system and graphics
- Loud
- slow autofocus in live view

Olympus DSLRs keep getting better, and the E-30 is undoubtedly the best yet. Despite only twelve months gap between them the E-30 is a considerably more appealing camera than the E-3 (which, thanks to its tank-like construction, still sits above it in the range).
Pros:
- Excellent out-of-camera JPEG results with good Dynamic Range
- pleasing color and subtle tonality
- Bright clear viewfinder far better than most Four Thirds cameras
- Slightly improved resolution and pixel level sharpness over E-3
- Good range of image parameters (but not enough latitude in terms of...
Cons:
- Resolution not quite as good as best in class
- though you won't see it in JPEGs
- Higher noise levels/noise reduction at higher sensitivities than its best competitors
- Not much highlight headroom in raw files (around half a stop
- Unreliable auto white balance and presets in artificial light
- Nice...

Olympus E-30
The Olympus E-30 ($1,299.99 list, body only) has enough nifty features to turn heads-most notably, offering the capability to add Photoshop-like effects and merge four images into one on the fly. But is that enough?
Cons:
- Noisy at high ISOs
- A bit pricey.

Olympus E-30
With a price gap of about $500 between Olympus' consumer models and the E-3, Olympus has long had a pretty big hole in its dSLR lineup--a hole populated by extremely popular competitors such as the Nikon D90 , the Canon EOS 40D , and the Canon EOS 50D .
Pros:
- Very nice photo quality and performance
- extensively customizable
- flip-and-twist LCD
- Art Filters are fun
Cons:
- Poor My Mode custom settings implementation
- without more control, Art Filters will remain a novelty for this class of camera

Olympus E-30. Still not up there with the big boys?
The E-30 is Olympus's own stepping-stone between the so-called "prosumer" models (what an awful word) and the E-3 professional SLR, being loosely comparable with the likes of the Canon EOS 50D, the Nikon D90 and the Sony Alpha A-350.
Pros:
- Fold out LCD screen
- Image Stabilization
- Zuiko lens quality
- Picture quality
- Flash options
Cons:
- Noise in low light
- Too many buttons
- Badly laid out
- Too many gimmicks
