New Nintendo 2DS XL review: gimmickless perfection

With many wondering where the 3DS line fits in a world where the Switch exists, Nintendo have answered that question with a device with a stellar game lineup that costs less than half the price of the hybrid console.

Simple but elegant design; Incredibly reasonable price; Awesome catalogue of games

The screen struggles to stay in place; Ridiculously small stylus; C stick isn't a serviceable analogue

New Nintendo 2DS XL Review

It feels fitting to be writing this while I'm listening to Radiohead, really. "You do it to yourself, just you, you and noone else" isn't the song ringing in my ears, but it's the most apt. I'm not mo

Great looks; Nice quality of life improvements; Good price

No major changes

Nintendo New 2DS XL review

Overall then, Nintendo's New 2DS XL offers a significant upgrade over the entry level 2DS in terms of build quality, processing power and form-factor - but with the bargain basement model available for just £75 these days, an extra £55 on top is a significantly higher level of investment.

Nintendo New 2DS XL mini-review: The best version of the 3DS hardware yet

While the Nintendo Switch is quickly becoming the handheld of choice-thanks in part to the likes of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey -the 3DS still has some life left in it. Kirby's Blowout Blast , Hey!

Nintendo New 2DS XL review

It’s hard to see who the New 2DS XL will appeal to. For those really wanting the absolute best, the New 3DS XL offers a significantly better display and feels much more of a premium device. The cash-conscious gamer, meanwhile, already has the standard 2DS. So the New 2DS XL sits between them in no man’s land. The hammer blow, though, is the Switch. It was only a few months ago that Nintendo released its hybrid console and it’s crystal clear that almost all of the company's focus is going towards producing games for that new platform, leaving the 2DS and 3DS out in the cold. Don’t get me wrong, the New 2DS XL is still a well-made device that would have been a portable champion three years ago. But in 2017? It just feels redundant.

Clamshell design a massive improvement on door-wedge 2DS; New processor offers more grunt; Handy little C-Stick;

Rough-around-the-edges display; Plasticky build; Limited games on the horizon ;

New Nintendo 2DS XL review: 2D is the new 3DS

The New Nintendo 2DS XL isn't going to set the world alight. It's not new and revolutionary like the wonderful Nintendo Switch. But the New Nintendo 2DS XL is a thoughtful and welcome addition to Nintendo's handheld console range.

Bigger; better version of the dated Nintendo 2DS; Great build quality with some smart refinements over the New 3DS XL; Excellent value and great entry point for DS newcomers

Short and stubby stylus; Interface is dated and clunky; Not enough new features to warrant an upgrade for New 3DS owners

Review: Nintendo New 2DS XL handheld

We're used to Nintendo's crazy ideas now. A mushroom-guzzling Italian? Sounds great. Motion-controlled bowling? Sure. Scales that can be used in a video game? Weird, but OK.

New Nintendo 2DS XL

When considered on its own, or when compared with other 3DS devices, the New 2DS XL is fantastic. It packs all of the New 3DS features into a well-designed package with a very attractive price tag.

Inexpensive; Functional, comfortable design; Supports library of thousands of DS and 3DS games spanning over a decade

Screen is very grainy and low-resolution next to the Switch; Feels redundant

The Nintendo New 2DS XL sacrifices the mostly superfluous 3D for a handsome re-design that stands head and shoulders above the rest of the 3DS/2DS family. And like its counterpart, it includes an improved processor and the ability to play SNES games.
