While the flagship Z7 has captured the most attention, Nikon's Z6 is the more accessible of the two models due to its lower price, and it's also the better of the two models for those interested in video capture and low light AF performance.

Nikon Z6 review

The Nikon Z6 is always going to be somewhat overshadowed by the more powerful and higher-resolution Z7, but actually it's a much more versatile camera, as well as being much more affordable.

12fps burst mode; Superb high-ISO quality; In-body stabilisation; Full frame 4K video; Stellar Z-mount lenses

Weak 310-shot battery life; Average buffer capacity; Some viewfinder lag

Nikon Z6 Review

The Z6 and Z7 are Nikon's first attempts at a full-frame mirrorless camera system. Although it took Nikon many years to finally come out with its own mirrorless system, it was definitely worth the wait for many Nikon photographers.

The Nikon Z6 has a very nice, high-quality image, its low light performance is great and it has a long battery life. We really like being able to crop your sensor at will and shoot slow motion up to 120 frames per second. Plus, there's no quality loss at that higher frame rate.

Nikon Z6: The ultimate all-round full-frame powerhouse

The Z6 is one of the standout releases of the past year. The Nikon Z7 is quite possibly the best camera on the market right now, but the Z6 comes a very close second for significantly less dosh.

12fps shooting; Excellent viewfinder and screen combo; Great handling

Fairly expensive; Single XQD card slot; Limited system (for now

Nikon Z6 review: Fabulous full-framer

Arguably the most well considered and capable of any full-frame mirrorless camera on the market. Nikon has got the lens mount right, the quality right and, despite strong competition from Sony's well-established range and Panasonic's forthcoming S1, we think any photographer would be mad to not give...

Great image quality; Huge potential from new Z mount lenses; Adapter for old lenses; Ease of use for existing Nikon users; Fast autofocus/burst mode (12fps; Silent shooting possible; Electronic viewfinder is of great quality and scale; Highly capable autofocus system

Single XQD card slot an odd choice; 24-70mm f/4 lens vignettes a little; DSLR continuous AF still has the edge; Not a full vari-angle screen (tilt only; Better battery life would be great; No EyeAF autofocus; It's rather expensive

Nikon Z 6

There are other options out there, some of which may be more appealing to photographers who don't have a long history with Nikon. Our favorite is the Sony a7 III, which is just a bit more polished all around, and is backed with a larger, more established native lens system.

24MP full-frame sensor; 90 percent autofocus coverage; 12fps Raw continuous shooting; In-body image stabilization; Tilting touch LCD; Big, sharp EVF; Compatible with Nikon SLR accessories; 4K video; Dust and splash resistant; Bluetooth and Wi-Fi

Baked-in Raw adjustments; Oversensitive lens control ring function; Limited native lens selection at launch; Single memory card slot; No PC Sync socket

Nikon Z6 Mirrorless Camera with 24-70mm Lens VOK020XA review

The Nikon Z6 body excels for portraiture in an outdoor and studio setting, and is also pretty amazing as an event/wedding/nightlife camera body as well. Even with its occasionally random autofocus, the camera absolutely shines in low light settings and is definitely worth adding to your gear...

Consistent & Rich Colors; Ergonomic Improvements from the D800 and previous DSLRs; Intuitive Controls with Fast programmable custom buttons; In-Body Stabilization; Fast & Responsive Touch Screen; Bluetooth & Wifi Connectivity; Lightweight; Massively improved autofocus; Easy to use internal...

FTZ mount gets in the way of fast lens changes when on a tripod; Poor AF in low light situations / backlit situations (Upcoming Firmware is supposed to address this); New & Expensive Memory Card; Single Memory Card Slot; Odd exposure & white balance behavior in mixed light scenarios & silent shutter...

Really impressed so far

Really impressed with this camera. Its so much lighter than my DSLRs, making it great for travel and carrying with me. The image quality and high ISO is amazing, and the new z lenses are really sharp! I can also say its one of the best mirrorless video cameras on the market!
