I bought this flash for my Nikon P7100 compact so that I could use bounce flash. It only tilts for a horizontal photo. It doesn't swivel for a vertical photo. When I want to shoot a vertical, I shoot as a horizontal and then crop it as a vertical. It works very well.

Nikon SB-300 Speedlight is a solid performer at a great price and ideal size!
I own a Nikon 1 V1 and this Speedlight reminds me of the original SB-N5 Speedlight for that camera. Like it the SB-300 is small and will fit nicely in my Nikon camera bag at one end. It runs on 2 AAA batteries so unlike the SB-N5 you will need to keep a couple handy at all times.

Speedlight Flash SB-300 for Nikon
Pros: This flash attaches quickly. It is the ideal flash to use in low-light situations when the camera's built-in flash is just not powerful enough. Cons: Other thoughts: I highly recommend this flash for anyone who uses a Nikon D3200 camera.

but for casual shots in our house it's awesome.
I use this with a Nikon D5100. Bouncing the flash off the ceiling with this makes a huge difference in the picture quality. It's night and day. I don't know how this flash compares to other models, but for casual shots in our house it's awesome.

Nikon SB-300
Great little flash if you want more power than your cameras built in flash. Also allows you to bounce the flash for more flattering lighting.

Good price
Huge upgrade from stock flash and bounce flash is a necessity. Even allows continuous shooting with flash under normal circumstances.

Nice Flash
The flash is definitey significantly brighter than the standard flash and has significantly improved indoor photos. I wish I had bought one awhile ago. It's tiny compared to some of the other Nikon flashes, so although it's more limited, it is very easy to carry around.
Pros:
- Bright
- easy to attach
- use
- transport
- only two AAA batteries required
Cons:
- Limited functionality
- doesn't swivel left/right
- no LED light for video like SB500
