Cheap body, great lens!

Just got the lens today and shot a few dozen macro shots and about 15 or 20 portraits. I love the optics! The body is pretty cheaply made, but the glass is excellent. Good weight as well.
Pros:
  • Great picture quality
  • Lightweight

Pros:
  • Good sharpness at optimum apertures
  • Lightweight

Good Prime lens for the money

Mid range telephoto Prime with VR. I've found focus to be sharp and accurate. I have not had the opportunity to use the Micro capability. We have the good fortune to have wildlife that share the area where we live and we can get quite close without either

Beautiful macro, beautiful portraits

I loved taking pictures of flowers with my point-and-shoot, so I was missing the ability to picture the small things in life after upgrading to dSLR. This is my first true Macro lens and I'm not disappointed.
Pros:
  • Nice Bokeh

Nikkor 85mm Micro

Great lens with the sharpness I expect from Nikon. Ideal for my purpose shooting food. 85mm gives distance so I don't get tomato sauce on the lens hood.

Good Beginner lens

Looks really well if you supplement with a flash, preferable diffused.. (my sb-700 has those).. Didnt' look so well with led ring-light, but that was more the light I used... I may continue to keep , though I now wish for the 105mm f/2.8. It's a great price for beginning...
Pros:
  • Sharp, fast focus, accurate, auto-focus works well with macro of butterflies that are not moving, light, rugged
  • good color
  • f3.5 is adequate for many situations involving sun light
Cons:
  • not a FX lens for full frame
  • will vignette and not a good match with D800 if FX mode (which I should have payed attention to prior to ordering that bundle

Nikon AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor 85mm f/3.5G ED VR

Nikon photographers have no shortage of options when it comes to macro lenses. The AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor 85mm f/3.5G ED VR ($529.99) is one of a pair that's designed specifically for the APS-C sensor size used by Nikon DX cameras , and like the AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor 40mm f/2.8G , it's extremely sharp.
Pros:
  • Very sharp
  • 1:1 magnification
  • Compact
  • Optical stabilization system
Cons:
  • Lacks focus limiter switch
  • Short working distance for 1:1 photography
  • Not a full-frame lens
  • Some barrel distortion

Nikon AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor 85mm f/3.5G ED VR Review

The Nikon AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor 85mm f/3.5G ED VR is another excellent macro lens from Nikon thanks to exceptional sharpness and 1:1 magnification. Nikon photographers have no shortage of options when it comes to macro lenses. The AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor 85mm f/3.5G ED VR ($529.99) is one of a pair that's designed specifically for the APS-C sensor size used by Nikon DX cameras, and like the AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor 40mm f/2.8G ($279.99 at Amazon) , it's extremely sharp. But it costs almost twice as much, which cuts out the value proposition that helped make the Micro-Nikkor 40mm an Editors' Choice winner. If you want a longer macro lens and can afford it, we recommend going with the AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED ($896.95 at Amazon) , which adds full-frame compatibility (in case you upgrade cameras in the future), distortion-free optics, and a very useful focus limiter function. If you're entrenched in the DX format, the 85mm is a solid choice for a longer, stabilized lens, but the 40mm is a more appealing budget option. The Micro-Nikkor 85mm ($709.94 at Amazon)  is fairly compact at 3.9 by 2.9 inches (HD) and 12.5 ounces. ...
Pros:
  • Very sharp
  • 1:1 magnification
  • Compact
  • Optical stabilization system
Cons:
  • Lacks focus limiter switch
  • Short working distance for 1:1 photography
  • Not a full-frame lens
  • Some barrel distortion
