Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.8G Review

Although 50mm is considered to be the standard focal length for full-frame cameras (because it covers the same field of view as that of the human eye) the 85mm focal length is ideal for capturing isolated details in a scene.

Great lens at a great price

I used to have a 50mm f1.4g lens and it was soft at F1.4-F1.8, this 85mm lens does not have any distortion at any f-stop, pictures are extremely sharp.
Pros:
  • The pictures are sharp
Cons:

Great lens for your kit!

I use this lens on my Nikon D5100 for natural light portraits and grandkids volleyball & basketball photos. Focus speed is good in qym lighting. Although I haven't completely tested it, some reviews show best sharpness & quality at f4 to f8. Very pleased with results so far.
Pros:
  • Fast / accurate auto-focus
  • Nice Bokeh

This is my favorite lens on the D800. (I've never tried the 85/1.4G, though) The handling, weight and "feel" to this combination simply makes shooting a pure pleasure, and it provides fantastic IQ! A great-value nobrainer. Love it!
Pros:
  • Awesome lens for flattering portraits and great for landscapes too
  • Sharpness is excellent, clearly better than the old 1.8D-version in the open end
  • Pleasant bokeh, contrast and colours
  • Only 350g and a delight to handle
Cons:
  • I'd liked it to have 9 blades of course
  • but 7 rounded is ok
