If you need a long lens this will not disappoint. This is a great lens with nothing to complain about. Great IQ - even with a 1.4 or 1.7 TC Unfortunately the price is high and has gotten higher, and it is not easy to find in stock if you are looking to buy.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4E FL ED VR
The 500mm f/4E has a tough act to follow in the existing 500mm f/4G, as this optic already produces stellar image quality. Nikon has therefore tweaked the design for slightly faster autofocussing, better handling and enhanced VR.

Pros:
- Astounding lens all around
- VR allows hand holding for shots you couldn't have gotten previously
Cons:
- Expensive - but worth it
- Supply seems limited and unable to meet demand

Excellent Quality Images
Easy to use, with very quick auto focus, especially in 8m to infinity mode. Very sharp images at lower light levels and slower shutter speeds. VR11 system very effective.

I sold my last-generation 500 f/4 and picked up this new FL lens. With or without a 1.4x teleconverter, the IQ is stellar, clarity superb, and I have experienced no vignetting as stated by reviewer Ly D.

Sharp, fast focus, works well with TC-14E III, light for a 500mm
I have used this lens with the D810A, D750, and more recently, the D500. I am getting amazing results when shooting wildlife and nature photos, especially when paired with the D500. The VR feature is superb.

A Very Fine Lens Indeed
I talked myself into buying this lens after looking at the MTF curves (essentially perfect) and having something of a windfall to be able to afford it. The primary use is birds-in-flight, plus some close-up work.
