Worth it!

Today I picked up my new 400 2.8 FL. It came earlier than I expected so I was pleasantly surprised. Once I got it home and took it out of the cool case and held it, wow, that's when it hit me: It is noticeably lighter!

REVIEW: Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR Lens Review

Have you recently won the lottery? Do you like to shoot sports? Nikon's latest flagship 400mm f/2.8 may be for you then. The price of over £10,000 means only lottery winners and large news agencies may be able to justify the cost.

Purchase of a lifetime!

What can one say beyond what others have said already The first thing I noticed was the packaging. The lens was in its Nikon case, which was inside FOUR(!) nested boxes. Took a while to unpack. When I finally got it out, it was about the size I expected but much lighter than I expected.

Amazing lens, what is there really to say

Amazing lens, what is there really to say The first evening right before dark I took this photo of a raccoon in my backyard while sitting on my sofa - thru a glass window.

Nikon 400mm f/2.8E VR FL Review

A breakthrough for everyone who actually uses these lenses, this new 400/2.8 is almost two pounds (816g) lighter than the previous 400/2.8 VR , and 6.2 pounds(2,800g) lighter than the 400/2.8 I own, which is the original 400mm f/2.8 AF-I !

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR Lens Review

I've said it before and I'll say it again: everyone has their favorite lens and in my pack, you will always find one in the 400mm variety. To wit, I have Nikon's newer Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 G ED VR, the 200-400mm f/4 G ED VR and the standard-bearer of them all: the prime Nikkor 400mm f/2.8 AF-S...

Sharp, well designed and executed (lower tripod profile and non-slip hand grip are nice touches), hand holdable (when necessary), and two pounds lighter. Extremely fast focus! What's not to like? The price? Maybe. I upgraded, selling the older model meant only a couple thousand out of pocket.

It costs a lot of money

Superb performance

Fantastic performance, sharp, fast, well balanced and works well with the TC 14 III and TC 17. It is everything you would expect in a lens of this price and a major bonus is that it is light enough to handhold all day. I have used it with a D4S and D810 with outstanding results on both bodies.

Consistent Output; Durable; Lightweight; Quick Focus; Rugged; Sharp Focus; Strong Construction

Price; Soft Lens Hood
