REVIEW: Nikon AF-S Nikkor 200mm f/2G ED VRII

In this review Gary Wolstenholme takes a look at Nikon's latest 200mm prime. This new 200mm f/2 lens from Nikon costs a fair amount of cash at around £4995. This may seem like a lot, but for that you get a professional spec, weather sealed lens with the latest Vibration Reduction system, Nano...

Superb optical performance; Excellent build quality; Fast focusing; Negligible CA levels

Expensive; Size and weight can make it cumbersome to use

Nikon 200mm f/2G ED AF-S VR II Nikkor review by azoele

One of the best lenses in Nikon's lineup. Sharp wide open, fabulous by 2.8, with an incredibly smooth rendition of out of focus areas. It's one of those very few lenses that "make the picture themselves". The photographer clicks, and customers go "ohhh"...

Excellent image quality; Truly astonishing bokeh; Speed (T2).

Weight; Balance; Shape makes it a little more difficult to hand hold than it should be

Amazing

I have drooled over this lens since the very first version but never took the plunge until I reached the point of shooting almost entirely natural light images. I have all the high end zooms which I guess have their place but now I have the beautiful primes, the 24mm f/1.4, the 85mm f/1.4, and now...

Nikon Nikkor 200mm F/2G AF-S VR Lens - an outstanding low light performer

Here's my initial take on the Nikon Nikkor 200mm F/2G AF-S VR Lens. To start off, I bought this lens to use for low-light indoor situations. An example would be certain church presentations where the lights are dimmed down.

Milk and honey , $5000 worth

I have owned this lens for 2 years and if it was not for its size I wouldn't put it down. Super sharp, unbelievable bokeh. My portraits have bokeh as if it was just painted . Now this is not really a lens for portrait but I use it as such and been impressed.

Believe the Hype

The Nikon 200mm f2 earns its reputation. I wanted this lens for years but couldn't pull the trigger. My desire to own the lens finally cracked my wallet wide open and I bought it. Up until attaching this lens to my D850, the Nikon 105 f1.4 was my all time favorite portrait lens.

I'm a very passionate and serious photo enthusiast with a great appreciation for quality and fine engineering. I purchased the 200 f2 VRII about 6 months ago, partially as an additional tool for shooting indoor sports, but I have to admit a lot of it had to do with the tremendous reputation this...

Nikon 200mm f/2G ED AF-S VR II Nikkor

There are surprisingly few thorough reviews of this legendary Nikkor prime. I was fortunate to find a "Used" lens recently refurbished by Nikon - with a 6 month warranty at half the RRP. Still a serious outlay but I've never regretted the purchase.

Superb optics Edge sharpness excellent at f2 Very fast AF Great Bokeh Reliable VR excellent optical performance with Nikon TCs

heavy but manageable handheld cost focusing can be tricky to clinch
