Nikon 85mm f/1.4D AF IF Lens
While I hope to create a full Nikon 85mm f/1.4D AF IF Lens, my first priority is to include results from this lens in the lens comparison tools available on the site. This page currently exists because it is required by the database and content management systems for me to post information and...

Nikon 85mm f/1.4D AF Nikkor review by pc998
Elegance lens design with metal outer and inner barrel. Everything was made in Japan including the hood. Very usuable at F1.4 with excellent sharpness at F2.8 and onward. I've skipped the so called 50mm standard lens coz I think 85mm is a better focal length for use with FX sensor as a general...
Pros:
- Excellent sharpness and built like a tank
Cons:
- No macro

I've owned this lens for years and it was a bargain when I bought it. With the recent fast portrait glass released form Sigma and the updated Nikon 105E, the used prices of this legend are continuing to fall.
Pros:
- It is just big enough to bludgeon someone with, but not so big that you don't want to bring it with you
- Built like a tank, bokeh is somewhere between yummy and delicious
- Stopped down, it is a really well behaved, sharp lens for studio portraits
Cons:
- It's biggest sins are lacking weather sealing and flare
- but that is even debatable because it handles flare rather gracefully

WOW! That is all that one must or can say about this extraordinary optic. Most people I think would use this for portrait work, but why stop there. The glass is so crisp that wedding photographers and sports photographers would be crazy not to spring for this glass. I use it mainly at such events.
Pros:
- Optical performance almost flawless
- Fast
- fast
- fast (only one faster in the world - Canon's 1.2L
- Weight - not too heavy and feels very solid
- Size
- Metal hood
- not plastic
- Confidence it offers the low light shooter
- 77mm pro size filter thread (same as 17-55 and 70-200
Cons:
- Price is a bit high for a prime (only in the sense that the 17-55mm AF-S is the same price and offers more flexibility
- Lens hood cannot be reversed (threaded) for shorter storage
- Would be excellent with AF-S though focusing is not particularly slow on D2X

One of the best from Nikon
This is one of the best lenses from Nikon. Built like a tank and very fast. At f1.4, this lens is reasonable sharp. It becomes very sharp after f2. This lens also produces excellent bokeh that is generally know as "creamy machine." This lens deserves to be the best short telephoto portrait lens.
Pros:
- Very sharp
- excellent bokeh
- fast lens
Cons:
- None

Best Nikon Portrait lens
This is a pro grade lens - you can tell because it's mostly metal, weighs half a kilo and costs xxxxx (a lot). Personally I think it's worth every penny if you're after a pin sharp portrait lens that will probably last forever. At low f stops it does display a bit of an issue with contrast and border...
Pros:
- Build Quality
- Low distortion
- picture quality is phenominal
Cons:
- motor can be slightly noisy
- Price

A must have
If you like professional quality photos, this lens is perfict. Portraits are what I shoot most and it's sharp in studio light or in low light like in school events where the lights are dim. I have not taken many photos with my other lens since I used this one.
Pros:
- Consistent Output
- Sharp Focus
- Strong Construction
Cons:
- Slow Focus

Nikon 85mm f1.4D AF
This is a truly fantastic lens. Unlike many consumer grade lenses this one is exceptionally well made. It is very sharp even at max aperture. The bokeh is excellent. The build quality does mean that it is a bit heavy - this is a consideration when travelling (especially since you will need at least...

Great lens...A+ all around
I've long been waiting to own this amazing piece of glass and was worried I had built it up to be more than it could deliver. Not so, on the D700 this is a superb setup for portraits, and is a great/fast lens for candids. Amazing bokeh!
Pros:
- Consistent Output
- Durable
- Easily Interchangeable
- Fast / accurate auto-focus
- Nice Bokeh
- Rugged
- Strong Construction
