Lens Test: Nikon 20mm f/2.8D AF

What you should know : If any optic in Nikon's extensive lens line can be called a standard ultrawide, it's the long-running 20mm f/2.8D AF Nikkor. Covering an impressive 94- degree angle, it's also pleasantly compact and fast enough for available-light shooting.

There isn't a whole lot to say about a fixed 20 lens. It is sharp, contrasty, and a bit fragile. All of Nikon's "very wide" lenses have "close-range correction" (CRC). This is a "floating element" that moves relative to the other pieces of glass inside the lens as you focus.

Nikon 20mm f/2.8D AF Lens

While I hope to create a full Nikon 20mm f/2.8D AF Lens, my first priority is to include results from this lens in the lens comparison tools available on the site. This page currently exists because it is required by the database and content management systems for me to post information and standard...

Nikon AF Nikkor 20mm f/2.8D Lens Review

Nikon AF Nikkor 20mm f/2.8D is one of the older, AF wide angle lenses in Nikon's modern lens lineup. Released in 1994, the lens has not gone through any revisions so far. Up until mid 2000, the lens remained the widest, AF-type, rectlinear prime in Nikon's lineup (that title belongs to AF Nikkor...

Nikon 20mm f/2.8D AF Nikkor review by 123click

A wide angle lens with great center sharpness but not as good as my 14mm but at a third the cost what could you expect? and what's more it can take a front filter when conditions are too dirty to pull out my 14mm which has no protection at all.
Pros:
  • Takes a front filter
  • very compact
  • resonably sharp
  • low distortion
Cons:
  • Window glare is dreadful

Nikkor AF 20mm f/2.8 D - Review / Test Report

The build quality of the lens is very good and in line with most moderately priced Nikkors. The outer barrel is made of good quality polycarbonate combined with a metal mount. The small rubberized focus ring operates very smooth.

Great product

The whole thing cam in a carrying bag and the muslin chroma key green was in a plastic storage bag. It was easy and quick to set up and figure out. The green screen was easy to set up and I was taking my first shots in about 10 mins. Would have been sooner if I had figured out a couple things.

Coming from Leica and Olympus film cameras, I'm used to 21mm lenses that are quite a bit smaller than this one. It's only small in comparison with modern bloated zooms, which I won't carry around at all. Nevertheless, it's the sharpest W/A I've ever had, especially at f4.
Pros:
  • Sharp, sharp, sharp
  • Very flare resistant
Cons:
  • Larger than it needs to be
  • in my opinion
