The world's first camera with an integrated projector, the 12.1-megapixel Coolpix S1000pj's most interesting feature will either have you chortling with delight or feeling totally unimpressed.
Pros:
- Projector sounds stupid in theory but is quite impressive in practice
- Included projector stand and remote
- Really easy to use
Cons:
- Weak projector
- Expensive
- Pretty ordinary as a camera

There is no doubt that the Coolpix S1000pj is a great concept and a superb technical achievement but as a ￡400 camera the performance is pretty ordinary, not to mention the lack of manual control and HD movie recording. Nikon should also re-think some of the camera's operating processes.

Depending on how much you like viewing your photos or letting others view your photos, the Nikon Coolpix S1000pj is either really cool or a waste. The compact camera houses an ultrasmall projector able to display photos and video at sizes up to 40 inches diagonal at the press of the button.

Nikon Coolpix S1000pj
The S1000pj is perceived as a novelty camera from the outset, so shaking this image is relatively difficult. Fortunately, in practice the projector is quite good for its intended purpose and playing around with it to display movies and photos is a lot of fun.

To call 2009 the year of the camera gimmick is no overstatement. There have been some serious innovations, and some seriously good ideas, so when it comes to building a projector into a camera, which category does it fall into?
