I couldn't believe the pictures

I am a Nikon user and have a D800 with an 80-400 mm lens that I use for bird watching. One of the issues is that my camera with lens was very heavy while out in the field. A friend recommended trying the COOLPIX P900. It was so light and the pictures are incredible.

Very nice camera

This is a terrific point-and-shoot camera with a massive zoom, a bit larger and heavier than I would prefer but definitely an excellent buy because of the $100 discount.
Pros:
  • After a brief time
  • this camera seems to be nearly ideal with its 86-power zoom and high quality
Cons:
  • I was looking or a smaller, lighter camera but settled on this because of the price and quality
  • Don't need that big a zoom, but most less-expensive smaller cameras did not have a viewfinder, which I believe is necessary especially for one with a large zoom

This is a difficult camera to review in a way that makes it clear who it is suitable for. My background is like an amateur photographer for a number of years back. I mostly use a full-format camera which, of course, is in a completely different league.

Nikon Coolpix P900

The Nikon Coolpix P900 is a bridge camera which features the current market leading zoom ratio of 83x optical zoom. That gives you an equivalent of 24 - 2000mm in 35mm terms. There's also a Dynamic Fine Zoom - a type of digital zoom - which boosts this up to 166x, or 4000mm equivalent.

Nikon P900 review

Nikon's P900 currently leads the market for optical zoom range, with its 83x ratio equating to 24-2000mm in 35mm terms. Nikon claims this allows you to see things not visible to the human eye - such as details on the surface of the moon.

Good telephoto, but...

I purchased this camera the day it came out...March 19. After trying it out around our yard, I decided I't take it instead of my Nikon D300 and an extra lens on our Alaska trip. Big mistake. When you go to Alaska, you want the best photos you can get.
Pros:
  • 83x Zoom
  • Lightweight
Cons:
  • Not Sharp Enough Focus
  • Too Slow Focusing
