Nikon Coolpix B600 Review

The growth of the smartphone has all but stalled the once popular budget camera category, but the superzoom category continues to show signs of life thanks to optics that can’t fit in a phone. At about $330, the Nikon Coolpix B600 falls easily into the budget category, but brings with it a 60x zoom lens. However, to reach that low price, Nikon threw out several big features, like 4K video, manual exposure, and fast performance. What’s left is a dull, limiting camera that fails to make a strong case for itself. It’s easy to find a great camera when you have thousands of dollars to spend, so we can forgive the B600 for cutting corners to hit its low price. But the 60x zoom lens is the camera’s only hit, and with so many misses, that just isn’t enough. The grip of the Nikon B600 says DSLR, but the controls say point-and-shoot. It’s a comfortable camera to use for long periods, which is an advantage over a phone. The low weight — just a touch over a pound — builds on that comfort factor, a...

Nikon Coolpix B600 Review

The Nikon B600 offers maximum zoom on a minimum budget - but mixing a big zoom with a low price comes with some significant tradeoffs. Image quality suffers indoors and in low light, while even in good lighting the camera tends to stick with conservative shutter speeds which can introduce blur.

Nikon Coolpix B600 Review

Nikon have refreshed the two-year-old Coolpix B500 by adding an even bigger zoom lens, up from 40x to a whopping 60x on the new B600 model. Other new features are harder to find, though - indeed, Nikon have actually taken away more features - most notably the tilting screen, NFC connectivity and AA...

Nikon Coolpix B600

The Nikon Coolpix B600 promises a ton of zoom for not a lot of money, but at the cost of useful features that are worth spending a bit more for.

Nikon Coolpix B600 Review

The Nikon Coolpix B600 is a new entry-level ultra zoom camera from Nikon, with a 60x optical zoom lens, a 16mp CMOS sensor, FullHD video recording, and built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It's available for around £320.

60x optical zoom lens; Good colour reproduction; Wi-Fi and Bluetooth; Easy to use

Doesn't offer 4K video; Feels over-priced for a budget ultra-zoom; No manual modes; or raw shooting; Disappointing panoramas

Nikon Coolpix B600 Review

The Nikon Coolpix B600 ($329.95) is a small camera with a lot of zoom power—60x to be precise. It gets there by using a smartphone-sized image sensor and a relatively dim aperture lens, and keeps size and price down by omitting useful features like a tilting LCD and EVF. For the money, we recommend the Panasonic FZ80 more highly—it's a little big larger, but also sports a 60x zoom and adds a good EVF. Small Body, Huge Zoom The B600 isn't quite pocket-friendly—we've seen slim models with 40x power lenses, but never anything longer. It is small enough, though, to slip into a small messenger bag or purse without a problem. It measures 3.2 by 4.8 by 3.9 inches (HWD) and weighs about 1.1 pound. It's a little smaller than the FZ80, which is small for a bridge model with an EVF—3.7 by 5.1 by 4.7 inches and 1.4 pounds. The lens offers 60x of zoom power, starting at a 24mm wide angle and reaching a 1,440mm (35mm full-frame equivalent. It's a lot of power. The red-winged blackbird is a ...

Lens Cap

The camera seems fine except that the lens cap protrudes out from the side of the lens when it is in place. This means it is easily knocked off the lens and since there is no retaining lanyard it has already been lost.
