You don't have to be a fan of basketball. You don't have to know who cover star Paul George is, who he plays for or even know your bank shot from your finger roll or putback and tip in. All you need to know is that NBA 2K17 is one of the best sports games ever.

If nothing else, then, the game manages to impress with the sheer level of detail it provides. You could spend months trying to work through the career mode, not even touching MyGM or MyTeam, and feel as though you got your money's worth.

Every year I wonder how the NBA 2K series is possibly going to get better. Sport games are accustomed to drops in quality considering their annual nature, particularly when a series seems to be at its best for a number of years. I keep waiting for NBA 2K to have this drop.

As a middle-of-the-road basketball fan, so to speak, I'll admit that enjoyed NBA 2K16 immensely. The result of a large amount of fan feedback, 2K16 was critically and commercially lauded as one of the most complete sporting games in recent memory.
