Review: Mugen Souls for PS3

NIS America is known for taking chances on unique games. It will look at titles other companies wouldn't touch because they're too weird, too suggestive or perhaps just too Japanese.

Great translation, plenty of funny situations, character designs are mostly really cute, there's an interesting premise and the story is pretty interesting; Battles are a unique blend of strategic and turn-based; You can tweak the camera to your liking so it's just the way you like.

A bathing mini-game "was" removed, but since it was pretty offensive and unnecessary it's really no big deal; There isn't always voice acting for event scenes; A more comprehensive Moe Kill tutorial would have been helpful; All custom peons start out with no armor/clothing/weapons.

Mugen Souls Review

Drew reviews yet another quirky RPG. Discover how many panty shots he had to endure in his review.

+ Some interesting mechanics; + Sound battle system

Overly complicated; Excessive mechanics/lack of explanation; Dated graphics with frame rate issues; Content may be offputting to some

Despite its issues, Mugen Souls is a fun game that would benefit greatly from a good in-game help system or external wiki.

Great music; entertaining gameplay

Frustrating menus and controls; overly complicated in a number of ways

Mugen Souls PS3 Review

There is no doubt that if you want a wacky RPG experience, then the Japanese are the masters at delivering such bizarre concepts and stories for the genre. Compile Heart, who are teaming up with Nippon Ichi Software again, are no strangers to adding weirdness to the genre.

Complex but repetitive and grating, Mugen Souls is overwhelming for all the wrong reasons.

There's a lot to appreciate about the anime-style trappings seen in many Japanese role-playing games. The influence of Japan's rich history of cartoon and comic art can translate to colorful environments, outlandish characters, and even some offbeat humor. Mugen Souls is one such RPG.

Well-drawn character artwork; Some cute digs at RPG conventions

Gameplay systems don't intersect well; and are rarely rewarding; In-game tutorials don't explain mechanics well and can't be viewed later; Field environments are boring and sparse; Space battles are much too easy

Best RPG

This is one of the best RPG games I have ever played. It has the complex gameplay and long lasting appeal of Disgaea while having the fun gamplay of Hyperdimension Neptunia MK2. Lots of people say the comedy isn't very funny but I thought it was hilarious.

A lot of fun but not for everyone

The game is another wacky JRPG which has more of a disgaea madness to it with level caps reaching 9999. The games a lot of fun to play but I can understand its not for everyone and most people wouldn't probably enjoy it

Mugen Souls (PS3) - Review

Games in which sex is a focus of the appeal always seem to fall short in my experience. There are a few exceptions ( Ar Tonelico 2 comes to mind), but more often than not if you hear a lot about the sexiness of a Japanese game before it launches then the rest of it isn't going to hold up to the...

There is a lot of fun to be had here for fans of SRPGs, but it's hidden behind an layer of inappropriate situations, a mountain of tutorials, and probably two more sets of mechanics than any one game really needs.

There is bound to be a mechanic here that speaks to you; tactical combat is fun

Game veers toward creepy; tons of tutorial; steep learning curve despite all of the tutorials
