LG G5 is built around a modular concept. There are currently two modules available that extend the functionality of the phone. The camera module slides onto the phone and transforms the phone into a camera including buttons and a camera grip. The audio module has been developed in co-operation with Bang & Olufsen (B&O).

LG decided to ditch the modular design for the successor LG G6 due to limited interest among consumers.

LG G5 Smartphone Review

LG has been really creative this year to get the attention of customers and we think the Korean company offers a successful overall package. The combination of a good display, proven camera and decent battery runtimes is a solid foundation.
Pros:
  • bright and high-contrast display
  • Always-On display
  • comprehensive security features
  • good cameras
  • great voice quality with good noise suppression
  • modular slot
  • fast storage
  • expandable storage
  • very fast SoC
Cons:
  • only USB 2.0, no App2SD, preloaded forced apps, only LTE Cat
  • 6, low resolution of the wide-angle lens, ambient light sensor sets the luminance too low, throttling under heavy workloads

How, then, do we wrap up LG's G5? First and foremost, I was worried. I had used the G5 in Barcelona back in February, and loved it on first glance. Then, I had read a number of reviews by overseas reviewers which weren't exactly glowing.

LG G5

The LG G5 may be the most innovative smartphone of 2016, but it isn't the best. The modular design needs more thought, and the battery life should have been better. It is amongst the fastest phones in the market, though, and has a great camera.
Pros:
  • Extremely fast and powerful
  • Good display
  • Good camera
Cons:
  • Modular design needs more thought
  • Battery life needs to be better

This is the phone to get if you want a removable battery, but it fails to live up to its world-changing Swiss Army Knife potential.

LG G5 review: Mix-and-match design can't beat Samsung's S7

This is the phone to get if you want a removable battery, but it fails to live up to its world-changing Swiss Army Knife potential. LG phones often play it safe, but this modular G5, which lets you swap out some parts, is all risk. I love the innovation -- no other company has gotten this far with a modular phone -- but unfortunately the device falls short on execution.
Pros:
  • The LG G5's unique modular design lets you swap in fun accessories. It has (two!) great rear cameras, expandable storage and a replaceable battery -- a rarity in high-end phones.
Cons:
  • Although you can swap out some parts, there aren't enough to make this feature compelling. You can only access the phone's app drawer in a specialized theme.

Two in one: LG G5 camera review

The LG G5's built-in super wide angle lens and the optional camera grip with a variety of controls earn it some extra points and make it a unique proposition for mobile photographers. Its pixel-level image quality is not among the very best, but exposure and color are good down to very low light levels. The G5's only major drawback is its video mode. It offers very little control over capture and low light footage shows little detail and high noise levels. If that is something you can live with, the LG G5 is an easy recommendation for any mobile photographer.
Pros:
  • Mobile still photographers value good control over the image capture process.
Cons:
  • Those who are more interested in video capture, or class leading pixel-level still image detail

LG G5

The G5 comes with a heavily skinned version of Android 6.0 Marshmallow . In addition to its own icons and a modified settings menu, LG has gone a step further and removed the app drawer, so all your apps are spread across the home screens, iOS-style.
Pros:
  • Speedy processor
  • Wide-angle camera mode and manual controls
  • Removable battery
  • Unique accessories
Cons:
  • Heavy software customization with some key Android features disabled
  • Considerable carrier bloatware
