Kirby Star Allies review – playing the bad guy

Kirby's games never seem fair on the enemies but this tiresome and poorly balanced co-op platformer offers little chance of fun for them or you.

The game is extremely well put together; with excellent visuals and dozens of enemies with unique and relatively complex powers

Even by the standards of the series the action is pointlessly easy, but also visually confusing and poorly suited to co-op play; Dull and repetitive level design, with irritating load times

Kirby Star Allies

Adorable, pink, marshmallow-like Kirby, mascot of HAL Laboratory's Kirby series, has always been greedy. He unhinges his jaw, swallows enemies whole, and absorbs their powers. His latest adventure, Kirby Star Allies , offers a twist on that formula: Though he can still devour his foes and copy their...

Kirby Star Allies Review

Kirby Star Allies introduces a neat new system that gives Kirby more powers than ever before. While Kirby's companions work well, the game never pushes players to tap its full potential. Every puzzle, every platforming sequence, and every boss fight is an absolute cakewalk - even by Kirby standards.

Beautiful; vibrant visuals; Co-op works well

Ridiculously easy; Puzzle solutions are fed to you; Lightweight on content

Kirby Star Allies

Kirby has been around for a fair few years now (since 1992 with Kirby's Dream Land, in fact), and this month marks his return in the form of Kirby Star Allies, developed for Switch and with an emphasis on party play.

Kirby Star Allies (Switch)

Sometimes, you just want to sit back and enjoy a video game without being pushed to your limits. Not every game has to challenge your endurance, your patience and problem solving skills.

Kirby Star Allies, Nintendo Switch

My 9 year old loves the game because you can friend enemies and fight some new and classic bosses from other Kirby games.

Kirby has been around since the mid 90s and brought a whole new world and characters nestled in Dreamland. The marshmallow vacuum ball has been defending his home from world enders and tried his hand at other genres for well over a decade now.

Colorful and entertaining; Controls are simplistic; Accessible to all ages

Campaign feels a bit short; Too few characters; Mid boss battle repetition; Needs more grefixxx

The Pink Puff Goes On Auto-Pilot

For better or worse, Kirby is Nintendo's most consistent franchise. New entries come often, and they don't stray too far from the "pretty good" mark in either direction. On that scale of inoffensiveness, Star Allies rests a bit on the low end, offering a bland Kirby experience with few new...

Kirby Star Allies isn't the greatest game in the series, nor is it the most original. Yet, with its fun gameplay, ample content and modes, and gorgeous presentation, it remains an irresistible title for Switch owners.
