Hands on: The Huawei P8 lite -- unlocked, inexpensive, and not bad

The P8 lite is not the most inexpensive phone on the market today. For example, Motorola's Moto G also offers a 5-in. LCD display but with a slower processor, less memory and without LTE capabilities for $180. So it all depends on what you're looking for. In this case, Huawei's foray into the U.S.

Huawei P8 Lite (Unlocked) Review

The P8 Lite is to the Huawei P8 what Apple's iPhone 5c was to the iPhone 5s ( at Amazon) . The core experiences are largely comparable, with some performance concessions and design tweaks in the name of affordability. Unlike its fancier sibling, the P8 Lite is fully banded for U.S. use, and it's available for just $249.99 unlocked. It's a tremendous smartphone value and an especially alluring option for Android fans that prefer the iOS aesthetic. But competition on the unlocked phone  market is fierce, and the Alcatel One Touch Idol 3 ($249.99 at Amazon)  remains our Editors' Choice thanks to its beautiful display and better camera output. Design, Features, and Call Quality Without reference, you'd be hard-pressed to tell the P8 Lite apart from the P8 ( at Amazon) . It ditches the metal and glass accents for an all-plastic construction, but the faux-brushed aluminum look is quite convincing at first blush. At 5.62 by 2.77 by 0.30 inches (HWD) and 4.62 ounces, it's also a slightly...

The Huawei P8 Lite is a classy, well-equipped Android smartphone and an outstanding value, but competition on the unlocked market is fierce.

Thin, light, and solid build; Attractive; Affordable

Heavy-handed Android skin; Disappointing camera performance

Priced at just $250, the Huawei P8 Lite is a good entrant in the budget-friendly smartphone space, but it does fall short in some key areas when compared to its competition.

Reliable and long lasting battery life Expandable storage Limited yet fluid user experience

Poorly lit display Uninspired build Ships with old software

Huawei P8 Lite Review

Already available in Europe, the sleek and affordable Huawei P8 lite was announced in London on April 15, 2015 alongside its high-end sibling the Huawei P8. The P8 lite has now been officially introduced in the US market and we had the opportunity to get our hands on it early on, during a private...

Huawei P8 Lite

Without a carrier to subsidize their prices, unlocked phones can get expensive. Not so with the Huawei P8 Lite, however. At $250, £180 or AU$300, it's incredibly affordable -- it costs about the same as some high-end devices with a contract.

The Huawei P8 Lite has a low price; a lightweight design; a sharp camera and dual-SIM capabilities

The handset runs the rather dated Android KitKat OS; and its camera settings don't rotate when the phone is held in landscape mode

Huawei P8 Lite (unlocked) review: Though cheap, it lags behind competitors

Without a carrier to subsidize their prices, unlocked phones can get expensive. Not so with the Huawei P8 Lite, however. At $250, £180 or AU$300, it's incredibly affordable -- it costs about the same as some high-end devices with a contract. In the US, you can purchase it directly from Huawei's online store or other retailers like Amazon.

The Huawei P8 Lite's affordable unlocked price is compelling, but the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 is a much better deal.

The handset runs the rather dated Android KitKat OS; and its camera settings don't rotate when the phone is held in landscape mode.

Huawei P8 Lite (2015) review

From the iPhone to a $20 Nokia, every smartphone is made in China. Motorola attempted to bring manufacturing back to the US with the launch of the original Moto X, but that ended up only lasting a year.

Huawei P8 Lite Review

There's a burgeoning market for unlocked phones among shoppers who want quality handsets without spending flagship bucks. The Huawei P8 Lite joins the fray with a 5-inch display, 13-megapixel camera and dual SIM card slots, all for a very reasonable $249.

Good camera; Dual SIM card slots

Short battery life; Runs older Android OS; Low display resolution

Huawei P8

You may not have heard of Huawei (that's ‘hwah-way', not Hawaii), but you've probably crossed paths before. The Chinese firm is actually the world's largest telecommunications company, having overtaken Sweden's Ericsson in 2012.

Vibrant colours; Supports hi-res audio; Strong camera; Good build

Picture needs stronger contrast; Sound needs more refinement
