Huawei Mate 8 Smartphone Review

The Huawei Mate 8 left a very good impression during our review with its noble chassis and the high performance. It is quite a big device with its 6-inch display, but the handling is still comfortable thanks to the thin frame.
Pros:
  • great case
  • bright display
  • excellent performance
  • very good battery runtime
  • dual-SIM
  • memory expansion via microSD
  • fingerprint scanner
  • no bloatware
Cons:
  • high color deviations of the display
  • bad front camera
  • high price
  • mediocre GPS
  • slight throttling under sustained load
  • speaker

The Mate 8 is the first smartphone to use Huawei's 16nm HiSilicon Kirin 950 octa-core chipset, which uses a quad-core 2.3GHz Cortex A72 and a quad-core 1.8GHz Cortex A53. The GPU is a 900MHz Mali-T880MP4m, which is the same GPU found in Samsung's new Exynos 8890-equipped Galaxy S7.
Pros:
  • 6-inch display in a 5.5-inch form factor
  • Elegant all-metal construction
  • Superb battery life
  • Good value for a flagship phablet
Cons:
  • EMUI 4.0 may not be for everyone
  • Benchmark performance may not be able to compete with 2016 models
  • No support for 4K video recording

Time-saver edition

Great as it may be, Huawei's high-end phablet is not perfect, and you'd better be aware of its flaws, even if you choose to ignore them. The camera could use plenty of improvement, and the Android overlay is a love-it-or-hate-it affair.

T he growth of Huawei has been made even more impressive on the back of their exit from the US market in 2013 after allegations of Chinese government liaison and spying, and has been so significant it couldn't be ignored, even by Google.

Huawei delivers great hardware yet again and the Kirin 950 sets the benchmark for performance in 2016 but a poorly conceived user experience and mediocre camera detract from what could have been a great smartphone

  • Super fast fingerprint sensor
  • Great design
  • Exceptional build quality
Cons:
  • - Average speakers
  • Mediocre camera
  • Software needs a lot of work

The Huawei Mate 7 was arguably the best phone of 2014 – it offered more features and, in some instances, better performance than every other flagship phone on the market while costing hundreds of dollars less.
Pros:
  • 6-inch screen but thin bezel
  • Good battery
  • Well-placed
  • fast fingerprint reader
  • Much cheaper than competition
Cons:
  • Aussie version is overpriced
  • Aussie version has no dual-SIM
  • Need grey import for best value
