The Mate 20 Pro is Huawei's contribution to the top-end of the smartphone market, and it more than holds its own in very esteemed company.

A work of art

Huawei describe the Mate 20 Pro as "a forged masterpiece of 3D glass with smooth curves and seams that dissolve into the design. A streamlined symphony in the palm of your hand." In other words, it looks great! The slim design also means that it feels comfortable in your hand as well.

World-first technology

The Mate 20 Pro boasts the world's first 7nm mobile AI chipset in the form of the Kirin 980. This lifts speed and power efficiency to a level well above many other smartphones occupying this space in the market.

Fantastic for photographers

The new Leica Triple Camera is powered by AI, which gives you performance and features you can only dream of. The 40 MP main RGB lens captures amazing detail in everyday shots and the 8 MP telephoto lens gets you up close when taking long distance shots. Meanwhile, the new 20 MP Leica Ultra Wide Angle Lens comfortably captures everything you need it to in landscape photos and macro shots.

Rough and tumble

For all its beauty, the Mate Pro 20 is not a fragile device. The IP68 rated water and dust resistance means you can take the phone pretty much anywhere you want to go.

More life from your battery

The larger 4200 mAh battery, with AI power management, gives you more ON time and less down time, while the 40 W2 Huawei SuperCharge lets you charge the Mate 20 Pro up to 70% in just 30 minutes.

You've got Samsung , Apple , LG , Google , Razer , Samsung (again) and then - finally - Huawei . Even speaking as someone who writes about this stuff for a living, it feels like things are getting a little out of hand and overly-crowded.
Pros:
  • Exclusive features
  • Top-tier smartphone camera
Cons:
  • Expensive
  • Nano Memory isn't yet a standard

My new buddy is called the Huawei Mate 20 Pro

I thought I'd run through my experiences so far – please bear in mind that I've got pudgy fingers and can't touch type on a smartphone. I could always attach my Bluetooth keyboard. I'm pondering attaching a display to it too, so I could use it as a portable PC. But then I'd need a mouse as well.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro review: the best America can't get

This time last year, Huawei was laboring behind the scenes to secure its first carrier deal in the United States for its freshly unveiled Mate 10 Pro flagship phone. Huawei Mate 20 Pro review: you'll wish you could get one

2018 is perhaps one of Huawei's most exciting years yet. Almost like the script for a Hollywood blockbuster, the year began with a tragedy that seemed like a death sentence for the protagonist. It left its hero in a period of limbo, its future uncertain.

  • Top notch cameras with impressive Night Mode
  • Quirky two-way wireless charging has potential
  • Beautiful design
  • manageable size and weight
  • Impressive performance and battery life
Cons:
  • USB-C "speaker" can get blocked by charger
  • Not available in the US

Huawei Mate 20 Pro review: The Pro you'll want to know

Huawei released our favourite phone of 2018 in the P20 Pro . Which means its bigger-screen cousin, the Mate 20 Pro, has all eyes fixed in its general direction to see if it can do the seemingly impossible: be even better.
Pros:
  • Gorgeous design outshines even the Galaxy S9
  • In-screen fingerprint scanner is the best of its kind
  • Triple rear camera arrangement offers the best capabilities on the market
  • Huge battery capacity that lasts for an age
  • Fast-charging (40W) and Qi wireless charge
Cons:
  • Square camera arrangement isn't pretty
  • EMUI software hiccups - audible 'click' in silent mode and notifications issues for some apps
  • No 3.5mm jack
  • Some AI camera features are overzealous
  • No Qi wireless charger in the box
