The Mate 20 Pro is Huawei's contribution to the top-end of the smartphone market, and it more than holds its own in very esteemed company.

A work of art

Huawei describe the Mate 20 Pro as "a forged masterpiece of 3D glass with smooth curves and seams that dissolve into the design. A streamlined symphony in the palm of your hand." In other words, it looks great! The slim design also means that it feels comfortable in your hand as well.

World-first technology

The Mate 20 Pro boasts the world's first 7nm mobile AI chipset in the form of the Kirin 980. This lifts speed and power efficiency to a level well above many other smartphones occupying this space in the market.

Fantastic for photographers

The new Leica Triple Camera is powered by AI, which gives you performance and features you can only dream of. The 40 MP main RGB lens captures amazing detail in everyday shots and the 8 MP telephoto lens gets you up close when taking long distance shots. Meanwhile, the new 20 MP Leica Ultra Wide Angle Lens comfortably captures everything you need it to in landscape photos and macro shots.

Rough and tumble

For all its beauty, the Mate Pro 20 is not a fragile device. The IP68 rated water and dust resistance means you can take the phone pretty much anywhere you want to go.

More life from your battery

The larger 4200 mAh battery, with AI power management, gives you more ON time and less down time, while the 40 W2 Huawei SuperCharge lets you charge the Mate 20 Pro up to 70% in just 30 minutes.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro vs Samsung Galaxy Note 9

The Mate 20 Pro brings three incredible rear facing cameras, secure 3D face identification, an amazing display and cool glass back design. It has everything you could want n a phone. Everything except a stylus, something the Note 9 has. It works amazingly and if you’re a note taker or illustrator it’s the phone for you. The Note 9 is more expensive than the Mate 20 Pro, too. Choose the phone based on the features you need most.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro review

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is a masterclass in how to push phone tech to its limits. It has the most tech-packed camera around, fits an almost unfeasible amount into what is a bafflingly compact frame and is also one of the best-looking phones around. It really does have the lot. And the niggles? We’d love a louder speaker, a headphone jack and a more powerful GPU. But aside from that headphone port, those shortcomings are only obvious when you have all the rivals there for a side-by-side comparison.
Pros:
  • Surprising compact design
  • Incredible camera versatility
  • Jam packed with tech
Cons:
  • No headphone jack
  • GPU not as impressive as CPU
  • Speaker could be louder

Huawei Mate 20 Pro review: Sweet cameras, sour software

Despite being frozen out of the US market due to political opposition, Huawei still managed to surpass Apple this summer to become the world's second largest phone maker behind Samsung.
Pros:
  • Design Notch aside
  • the Mate 20 Pro is thin and sleek
  • somehow fitting in 4 cameras
  • depth sensors
  • and a huge battery into a very small frame
  • Cameras Like the P20 Pro
  • the triple camera setup makes for some of the best photos on a smartphone
  • Performance With a 7nm Kirin 980 chip every bit as...
Cons:
  • Software Some users probably don't mind EMUI
  • but as far as I'm concerned it offers one of the worst software experiences on an Android phone
  • to the point where I actually found it unenjoyable in daily use
  • Biometric unlocking Both the in-display fingerprint sensor and face unlock are passable
  • but...

Huawei Mate 20 Pro Review

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro feels, and looks, like a true flagship device, with an abundance of technology crammed into a stylish and relatively compact smartphone, considering the large 6.39inch screen.

  • Leica Triple Camera
  • Ultra-wide-angle 16mm equivalent lens
  • Master AI can produce some very good looking photos
  • Large 4200mAh battery
  • In-screen fingerprint reader
  • Stereo speakers
Cons:
  • Focus issues with telephoto and standard lens at times
  • Strong purple fringing from the ultra-wide-angle lens
  • Selfie camera focus point
  • 4K video framerate alters
  • High price

My new buddy is called the Huawei Mate 20 Pro

I thought I'd run through my experiences so far – please bear in mind that I've got pudgy fingers and can't touch type on a smartphone. I could always attach my Bluetooth keyboard. I'm pondering attaching a display to it too, so I could use it as a portable PC. But then I'd need a mouse as well.
