Huawei Mate 20 128GB

The Mate 20 is the new smartphone in Huawei's phablet range. Here are the big things to look out for in the latest flagship from the Chinese telecommunications giant.

World beating performance

Huawei has talked up the Kirin 980 chip, saying it would "destroy" chips found in other flagship phones. The Kirin 980 IS an impressive processor; in the Mate 20, Huawei promises 20% better performance and 40% better battery efficiency over its predecessor. Considering what the predecessor was capable of, these improvements are not to be sneezed at.

Memory and storage

These are impressive as well, with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and variations available should you need more.

Right to the edge

Thin bezels on the Mate 20 accentuate the 6.43-inch AMOLED display (with a resolution of 2244 x 1080 pixels) and take photos and movies right to the edge!

A focus on an improved camera

Huawei have made big strides in enhancing their smartphone - they consider it a priority as they compete against the cameras on other smartphones. The Mate 20 benefits from this focus on delivering an improved photographic experience. A feature packed selfie camera and triple lens rear camera work in conjunction with an AI Zoom, which automatically adjusts while keeping the subject in focus.

Lights, camera, action

There's plenty to like about the video recording too, including AI Cinema mode which adds filters while you're shooting, while a Video Bokeh mode blurs the background and keeps the subject firmly in focus.

Lots of battery power

Nothing is done by halves in the Mate 20, including the 4,000 mAh battery!

Huawei Mate 20 review

The question is, does the Mate 20 deserve to exist in a world in which the Mate 20 Pro is a thing Yes. Yes it does. It offers much of what makes the Mate 20 Pro great at a lower price, and adds a headphone jack.

Excellent battery life; Incredible power for the price; Versatile stills and video camera

Full HD+ screen resolution is low; IPS screen inferior to flagship AMOLEDs; No IP68 water and dust resistance

Huawei Mate 20 review

Though it doesn't feature all the bells and whistles of the Mate 20 Pro, the Huawei Mate 20 is an amazing smartphone in its own right. It boasts a stunning Dewdrop display, an impressive trio of cameras on the rear powered by AI to produce amazingly detailed, well-lit images and the world's first...

Great phone but NOT dual sim

This is a great handset with all the quality you expect from Huawei, BUT it is not a dual sim phone as stated in the technical spec. It has space for one nano sim and one nano memory card only.

Fantastic features

I was concerned about swapping from apple to android but I am converted. Battery life fantastic. 2 days usage on one charge. Camera exceeded expectation. It takes fantastic photos especially portraits. It is just great to use and hold.

Huawei Mate 20 X Review

Seven whole inches sounds like quite a handful, doesn't it. When we're talking about the screen on a smartphone, it certainly is. Or rather, it certainly was. Cast your mind back to the Nexus 7 tablet from Google , which had a 7-inch screen, and was in no way suitable for one-handed use.

Surprisingly compact; Massive battery; True gaming credentials; Beautiful large screen

Very large body; Inconvenient to carry around all the time; Expensive

Huawei Mate 20 vs iPhone XR

Chinese manufacturer Huawei has been making up serious ground in the smartphone world recently. It's now the second biggest seller in the market, pushing Apple down to third, and all without actually being able to sell products in the US due to the difficult political climate surrounding the two...
