Review: Horizon Zero Dawn suffers from style over substance

The world of Horizon Zero Dawn is full of promise. From mountainous tribal villages to clusters of long-decayed skyscrapers, through to mechanical caverns measureless to man, the environment of Guerrilla Games' open-world adventure is one that urges exploration.

Horizon Zero Dawn review

Guerrilla Games' punt on a new IP has paid off handsomely, as despite its silly title, Horizon Zero Dawn is a magnificent open world action-adventure that lives up to its hype.

A visual feast; Challenging yet highly enjoyable combat; A wonderful story

Slow start; Some jarring voice acting

During the first 5 or so hours of Horizon Zero Dawn , I was drawn in but not necessarily captivated. The game felt solid as an iron forged spear, but the magic wasn't there that would cement this title into the upper echelon of games I hold dear. However, time has a habit of proving people wrong.

Incredible storyline and narrative | Huge open world | Jaw-dropping visuals and art design | Strong protagonist and supporting cast | Great voice work | Combat is frantic; varied and engaging | Environmental storytelling is fantastic

UI can be overbearing | Open-world has a lot of "traditional" activities that are sometimes a bore | Soundtrack is a bit lacking in certain places

Horizon Zero Dawn review - A game that surpassed its hype

Trembling, I hid away in the tall grass as a Thunderjaw stomped past me. The sound of cracking trees thundered through the air as it sought its nest. It was like I was a child again, watching Jurassic Park for the first time, and the T-Rex was breathing steam onto the glass window on the roof of the...

Horizon Zero Dawn takes place on Earth millions of years in the future where, as you guessed it, some or other cataclysmic event has wiped out most of humanity. Out of the ashes, new civilisations and tribes sprung up, each with their own unique culture.

Horizon Zero Dawn violates the Hippocratic Oath of game design

A decent open-world game with a bad story and a disappointing world is still a decent open-world game. To be played after you've finished the greats.

Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition

Well, there were a ridiculous amount of great games released last year, and we've finally had time to confirm that Horizon: Zero Dawn is one of them. More so when you take The Frozen Wilds DLC into account; which is brilliant, hosts many improvements, and quite handily is part of the complete...

Horizon: Zero Dawn review – a stunning but barely evolved RPG contradiction

On the face of it, a lavish and original fantasy epic set in a wonderfully realised world sounds like a welcome escape from the very real horrors being played out across the nightly news bulletins.
