Has-Been Heroes is an interesting take on the strategy genre. Mixing RPG, roguelike and strategy elements, what would normally sound and – to be blunt – does actually look like a incoherent mess, actually plays really well and is enjoyable once you can get your head around the combat system which is...
The mighty warrior and monk have saved their kingdom countless times and the land has been peaceful for so long that many have overlooked their heroic deeds. The king hasn't forgotten about them and summons the warriors for their final adventure: escorting his daughters to their new school.
Randomly generated maps to explore; lots of items, spells, and heroes to unlock
Confusing battle system and no adjustable game difficulty
Has-Been Heroes has potential. A unique hybrid of 2D brawler, rogue-like and puzzle game, it comes from Frozenbyte, the folk who bought us the trilogy of mostly brilliant Trine games. Yet Has-Been Heroes ends up as a curiosity that never really makes sense.
Interesting brawler/rogue-like/puzzle game design; Cool 2D art style; Lots of heroes; spells and other content to unlock
Too repetitive; challenging and demoralising; Rewards are too thin to justify the work; Fighting the same enemies in similar locations; over and over again
Gaming masquerading as masochism
Looks nice; Interesting battle system
Bloody hard; Not fun
This medieval tale of retired-heroes-to-the-rescue starts off with a small prologue that serves both as the tutorial, as well as the intro to the plot, which basically explains that three warriors must escort two young princesses… err, somewhere.
Nearly everyone has a hero. The thing with heroes though, is that they grow old. This is the basic premise of Has-Been Heroes , the latest game from Trine developer, Frozenbyte. It's appearing on several platforms, but the focus of this review is of the Nintendo Switch version.
Lots to unlock; Boss fights are fun; Feels fairly unique
General battles aren't very fun; Combat is clunky; Works better as a portable game
: Thanks to the day one patch, things are a little more bearable in-game which is really great to see. Having played through the first levels again, the initial battles are definitely slightly harder, but the boss fight at the end is challenging without being totally impossible.
After working on the Trine trilogy of physics-based adventure games, it's safe to say that Frozenbyte knows its way around the fantasy genre. Continuing in the grand tradition of sending three adventurers off on a harrowing quest, Nintendo Switch has now been graced with Has-Been Heroes , an RPG...
Frozenbyte were some of my favourite developers on the Wii U. I absolutely adored the Trine games, though admittedly that's the only games of theirs that I played. Has-Been Heroes is an interesting concept, and is one of their first games for the Switch.
