Multiplayer Online Battle Arena - a term that's practically alien to console gamers. This is mostly due to the assumption by developers that since the genre was born out of PC strategy games, it can't work on a console in any way.

One of my first fears going into this review was how well the controls would translate to the consoles and how difficult it would be to pick it up. Those fears were quelled rather quickly, as a 15 minute tutorial to start the game showed me just how easy the game is to pick up.

Gaming as a legitimate sport has been debated for years, and while some console games are tailor made for a competitive environment like Street Fighter or Halo, the majority of them are created for the PC and not consoles.

Guardians of Middle-Earth is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) akin to the likes of Defense of the Ancients ( DOTA ) and League of Legends ( LoL ).What separates this MOBA from others is that it is designed for and can be played only on consoles (360/PS3).

So it may not be the most exciting game out there, but for MOBA fans wanting a console addition you can't do much better than Guardians of Middle-earth at the moment. It's a step in the right direction for the genre on consoles and what better way to make that step than with Gandalf casting spells...

SERVERS ARE DOWN ON PS3, BUT XBOX SEEMS TO WORK FINE. Even without servers I enjoyed it. And it makes me want to try more mobas. A great intro into the genre.

I am sure there are very few people who have not heard of The Lord of the Rings . I would venture to say that a large majority of people have seen at least one of the movies or the new movie, The Hobbit , so you all know what these characters and their world looks like.

Mini-map is hard to follow; Matchmaking can take a while; AI is exploitable

Slightly above average or simply inoffensive. Fans of the genre should enjoy it a bit, but a fair few will be left unfulfilled.
