Google Chromecast (3rd gen)

Google Chromecast is the little dongle that's made a big difference in our everyday viewing habits. The 3rd generation Chromecast was recently released and here's what you can expect from the latest edition of this small but hugely entertaining device.

Plug & play

The 3rd generation Chromecast, like its predecessors, remains the epitome of simplicity. It really is a piece of cake to plug directly into your television, while the guided set up process is still short and sweet. You can be streaming in a matter of minutes.

A new design

New Chromecast, and a slightly new design to go with it. The glossy plastic casing of Generation 2 has been replaced with a matte finish, although given the dongle is so unobtrusive, you'll probably never notice this cosmetic change.

Faster than before

Depending on the strength of your internet connection, streaming on the Chromecast has always been quick and reliable. The new generation takes it up a notch, with Google saying that this device is 15% faster than its predecessor.

Stay tuned

The 3rd generation Chromecast will have the ability to play music with other connected speakers paired with Google’s smart gadgets. Stay tuned!

Your laptop on your TV

Use the Chromecast to mirror your laptop screen onto your TV, using the Cast function on your laptop's Chrome browser. Who needs glasses when you can surf the web or see other media on your big TV screen?

Start of a revolution

I think Google does great thing with their Chromecast product. They are easy to use and stream with ease. You get really get something as cheap as this that works as well as it does. Just know it doesn't come with a remote. Your phone or tablet etc. with the Google program is your remote.

Easy to Use; good sound quality; Good Value

Chromecast (2018) review: Google's revamped media streamer is what you make of it

The new Chromecast might not replace your Roku or Fire TV, but it can be a nice supplement to those devices.

A solid speed upgrade for first-gen Chromecast owners; Google Assistant enables powerful home automation; Launching videos by phone can be faster than...

No infrared control for TV volume or A/V gear; The Google Home app is bad at aggregating and searching for content; Pausing or adjusting volume by...

Google Chromecast 3 review: The same old with a better new

Google was pretty silent about the launch of this 3rd generation Chromecast, probably because there is nothing much and new that they could boast about. However, the Chromecast is one single device that can still change the way you can look at content differently on your standard or regular large...

The latest Google Chromecast is still a good buy for anyone looking for a simple, affordable streaming option, but if you already have a second-gen model, you should pass.

Quick and easy setup; Affordable; Casting from phone to TV still dirt-simple

Few upgrades over previous model; Does not automatically pause videos for calls; Amazon video not Cast-compatible

Google Chromecast (2018) review

The new Chromecast is much like the old Chromecast, but that's no bad thing The Chromecast is a great product that's clever on the engineering side but simple to use. Some might not like the lack of a physical remote, but that's part and parcel of the Chromecast experience – and there are lots of...

Affordable; Casting is neat; Good video and sound

Little new of note; No dedicated remote; No Amazon Video

Google Chromecast 2018 Model GA00439-NZ review

The newest version of Google Chromecast is basically identical to the old one and falls short of the budget competition from Amazon and Roku.

The super-affordable Chromecast streams Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, Pandora, HBO Now and thousands of other apps and games to your TV using an smartphone, PC or even voice as the controller; It hides neatly behind your TV.

The lack of a dedicated remote means you always need a smartphone, tablet or PC nearby to use it; Competitors at the same price offer physical remotes and onscreen displays, which are easier to use; There still no app support for Amazon Prime Video.

Google Chromecast (2018) review

Little in the way of new features

New design avoids dust and scratches; Can now stream 1080p at 60 fps; Slightly faster performance; Google Assistant support is very convenient

No 4K when Roku offers it at basically the same price; No Amazon Video; Lack of on-screen menu and built-in apps remains a turn-off for some; No physical remote
