Google Chromecast (3rd gen)

Google Chromecast is the little dongle that's made a big difference in our everyday viewing habits. The 3rd generation Chromecast was recently released and here's what you can expect from the latest edition of this small but hugely entertaining device.

Plug & play

The 3rd generation Chromecast, like its predecessors, remains the epitome of simplicity. It really is a piece of cake to plug directly into your television, while the guided set up process is still short and sweet. You can be streaming in a matter of minutes.

A new design

New Chromecast, and a slightly new design to go with it. The glossy plastic casing of Generation 2 has been replaced with a matte finish, although given the dongle is so unobtrusive, you'll probably never notice this cosmetic change.

Faster than before

Depending on the strength of your internet connection, streaming on the Chromecast has always been quick and reliable. The new generation takes it up a notch, with Google saying that this device is 15% faster than its predecessor.

Stay tuned

The 3rd generation Chromecast will have the ability to play music with other connected speakers paired with Google’s smart gadgets. Stay tuned!

Your laptop on your TV

Use the Chromecast to mirror your laptop screen onto your TV, using the Cast function on your laptop's Chrome browser. Who needs glasses when you can surf the web or see other media on your big TV screen?

Google Chromecast (3rd Generation) review

For years Chromecast has been the best value in HD streaming video players, and that hasn’t changed with the 3rd Generation model that released in 2018. If you want to turn any TV into a smart TV capable of streaming Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video and many, many more, this is the cheapest - and best - way to do it.

Marginally faster streaming; Nifty, versatile design; Same low price;

Doesn’t stream in 4K; No remote control

Google Chromecast (2018) Review

Instead of presenting the new $35 Chromecast alongside the Pixel 3 and Home Hub at its event in October, Google simply released it without a word. This is likely because, while it is indeed a new Chromecast, it doesn't actually do anything new. It's the same media streamer as the previous model, with only a slight design change, support for 1080p60, and a claimed performance bump. It remains a useful device, but without 4K capability it's much less appealing than it was a few years ago. A Slightly New Style }{{/ziffimage>The new Chromecast has the same disc shape as the previous version, but with slightly more rounded edges. It comes in matte black or white, and measures 2.1 inches around and 0.4-inch thick. A 3-inch flat gray ribbon cable extends from the Chromecast and terminates in an HDMI plug. A micro USB port (for power, with the included cable and wall adapter) sits on the opposite edge of the disc, with a reset button to its left and an indicator LED to its right. If you'v...

The new Google Chromecast media streamer is almost completely unchanged from its previous version. It's still functional and affordable, but without 4K it's much less appealing than the competition.

Inexpensive; Responsive; Lots of supported apps; Can mirror mobile device screens and display Chrome tabs

1080p maximum resolution; No on-screen interface or remote
