A GPS with long battery life, ideal for map/chart and compass users

For an executive summary read only the bold items. Why buy a hand held GPS when a smartphone and the right app does the same thing The eTrex series was purposefully designed for the outdoors to be rugged and reliable.

tough; waterproof; reliable; accurate; fast; AA powered; long battery life

expensive; no maps; B&W screen; no belt clip; not touch screen; joystick navigation

Garman etrex 10

Works good, however it really needs a good manual to go with it.

Garmin Etrex 10 GPS

I was new to GPS and was recommended by a friend to buy this model. The instructions were useless and the online manual was no better. At first I could only get longditude and lattitude co-ordinates, and no Ordanance Survey grid refs.

Entry Level But Does Everything I Need

This is the only GPS I have worked with so I can't say if the devices with more features would be any more useful to me. The battery life is good (2 AA batteries). As is typical with many battery devices the batter meter shows full for a long time and then when it starts to show less than full it...

Lightweight; Simple; Good Value

no maps; no color screen

Garmin eTrex 10 review

The Garmin eTrex 10 is Garmin's new entry-level unit in the recently updated eTrex series. It offers paperless geocaching, GPS+GLONASS and advanced track navigation, but has a monochrome screen, limited memory and cannot accept detailed maps (although you can see your track and waypoints, as...

If you're a beginner, you'll find the quick startup…

If you're a beginner, you'll find the quick startup and owner's manuals woefully inadequate. I had to call Garmin twice just to find out how to get the page that shows me how far I've hiked. I've used a Garmin GPS 60 for years, so I'm not a beginner.

It's relatively simple and not expensive

Thumb stick is too sensitive; it sometimes takes me 8 "presses" to "enter" instead of moving up, down, or sideways
