Garmin Dash Cam 55 review: A compact cure for common traffic hassles

Garmin's Dash Cam 55 adds an essential feature to the dash cam category . These little windshield-mounted watchers are already handy for protecting you from litigious pedestrians and drivers, or capturing a drive-by shooting or strange natural event.

Garmin Dash Cam 55

The Dash Cam 55 is a compact dashboard camera from Garmin. Since such devices tend to be left in the car all the time, the smaller they are, the better. The Dash Cam 55 is more diminutive than a GoPro, yet it shoots 1,440p and has Wi-Fi built in.

1440p resolution; Excellent image detail; Many additional safety features

Smartphone app provides limited control; A little pricey; Car power adapter can't be removed from cable

Great Size, Features, and Quality!!

I first purchased this from Costco.ca in Mid-May when it was first available...I currently own a Garmin Dash Cam 20 and 35. For the Dash Cam 55 it does record in 1440P but only in 30FPS. There is a recording mode of 1080P in 60FPS.

Reliable, flexible and easy to use dashcam

Dashcam is a nice to have device for many drivers, and may become a must have only after something happened. This is the third dashcam I have had. Comparing with the other two, there are some very nice unique features, and some features I wish it has built-in as default.

Garmin Dash Cam 55

Well worth the money. I tried a few cheap ones and decided to go with a "real one". Easy to install since I had existing wiring already. Takes great video. The voice command is pretty awesome. And the collision warning is extremely useful as it stops me from tailgating someone unknowingly.

Small, unobtrusive; Great quality pics/vids; All the driver assistance options are useful

Saving transferring video is confusing using the app; I still haven't figured it out

Got it today and have just pillaged with it a little. My first Dash Cam so I do not really know what to expect. But has already found out enough for an initial review, based on my common technique and contention / interest, starting with the positive things: + Magnetic mount on the windshield, works...

good dash cam

but it went in to some sort of reboot every time i turned it on it would say camera will turn off in 20 seconds recording stops. But it would get to 13 seconds left and stop but then go back to normal, but then do you trust the camera.

Garmin Dash Cam 55: The smallest, smartest dash cam

All in all, the Garmin Dash Cam is right up there with the very best dash cams you can buy. Video quality is excellent – at least as good as its rivals – and in most other areas it's superior.

Compact and unobtrusive; Excellent image quality; Effective driver aids

Smartphone app is limited; Screen tough to read with polarising sunglasses
