Fujifilm X-E1 review

The 16.3 effective megapixel, 1920x1080 pixels Full HD video shooting Fujifilm X-E1 competes directly with the Olympus OM-D E-M5 in the retro styled compact camera system stakes.
Pros:
  • Retro styling
  • Less daunting than the X-Pro1
  • Lovely image results
Cons:
  • A pricey step up
  • Screen isn't angle adjustable
  • AF could be quicker

Fujifilm X-E1 review

Six months ago Fuji finally joined the compact system camera goldrush with its X-Pro1. As the model name indicated this was a high-end interchangeable lens compact that came across more as a budget (at £1,000+) digital version of a £5,000 Leica, complete with rangefinder-like controls and tank-like...
Pros:
  • Smaller
  • lighter and slightly cheaper version of flagship X-Pro1
  • gorgeously retro styling
  • some lovely DSLR-like effects and results achievable with the 18-55mm kit zoom provided
  • good option for the semi pro photographer wanting a less intrusive backup to a DSLR
Cons:
  • More plastic-y elements to certain aspects of the build this time around
  • even though it commands a premium price tag
  • plus auto focus could be quicker still
  • particularly when adjusting framing during video recording

Fujifilm X-E1

The Fujifilm X-E1 ($1,399 list with 18-55mm lens) is the second interchangeable lens camera in Fuji's X series. It omits the hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder that is included with the top-end X-Pro1, and instead includes an extremely sharp OLED EVF.
Pros:
  • Excellent high ISO images
  • 4.6fps shooting
  • Sharp kit lens
  • OLED EVF
  • Top-notch control layout
  • Built-in flash
  • Cool retro design
Cons:
  • Fixed rear LCD
  • Noticeable shutter lag
  • Video support is limited to 24p

Fujifilm X-E1 Review

The Fujifilm X-E1 is a solid mirrorless camera with an innovative image sensor, but it doesn't quite have the chops to unseat the Olympus OM-D E-M5 as our Editors' Choice. The Fujifilm X-E1 ($1,399 list with 18-55mm lens)($699.00 at Amazon) is the second interchangeable lens camera in Fuji's X series. It omits the hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder that is included with the top-end X-Pro1, and instead includes an extremely sharp OLED EVF. Its 16-megapixel X-Trans CMOS image sensor uses a larger 6-by-6 array pattern of red, green, and blue pixels, which promises to produce more natural, film-like images than standard 4-by-4 Bayer pattern; it also eliminates the need for a low-pass filter, as it is not prone to the moiré effect. The camera does produce excellent images and will make the right type of shooter very happy, but it isn't quite as good as our Editors' Choice for high-end compact interchangeable lens cameras, the Olympus OM-D E-M5($499.00 at Amazon). Design and Features The X-E1 features the same retro styling that has adorned many a mirrorless camera. Our review unit was chrome with black leatherette, but there's also an all-black versio...

Great camera, especially for travelling

This camera is really good, amazing quality shots, and even at ISO3200 and above there is little noise. Photos have a special "something" to them. You should also look at the 35mm F1.4 Fulifilm lens, which is also great and worthwhile, and for a "fun" lens the Samyang/Rokinon/Bowen 8mm F2.8 fisheye...

There's a lot to be said for form as well as function and there's no question the Fujifilm X-series cameras elicit a certain response from those of us who enjoy both photography and well-built gadgets.
Pros:
  • Unique camera design makes you want to take pictures
  • Excellent JPEGs
  • little need to shoot raw most of the time
  • Reliable metering and AWB systems
  • good color (with choice of 'film modes'
  • Dials for exposure controls allow for easy check of settings by glancing at the top deck
  • particularly with...
Cons:
  • Built-in level isn't always as accurate as we'd like
  • Relatively slow AF makes photographing children more difficult
  • Framerates in continuous shooting mode aren't completely consistent
  • Camera disables RAW shooting without warning in some bracketing modes
  • Relatively low-resolution rear LCD...

Fujifilm X-E1

The X-E1 is one hell of a camera, leaving a few quirks aside. It is a mirrorless that can actually function as a substitute to the bulky DSLR for many users. If you're in the market for a DSLR, or want a camera system that will give you great images, then you might want to look at getting the X-E1.
Pros:
  • Compact body compared to a DSLR
  • Excellent image quality even at high ISO
  • Well-placed dials that make accessing settings really quick
Cons:
  • AF is a hit or miss at times
  • Lack of any sort of controls in video recording mode

Great Camera

Great camera for usability and quality of images. Downsides are the slow focus and video performance, but this is really a photographers camera. I really like the quick exposure compensation dial and viewfinder. More lens selection would be nice.

The Best Camera I've Ever Owned

I bought an X100 a couple of years ago and my wife simply adores that camera. Her only complaint: no zoom. And by only, I mean Only. In all other ways the X100 is amazing.
Pros:
  • Automatic mode is incredible
  • Picture quality is stunning
  • Picture depth is amazing
  • Built in panoramic function
  • Build quality is superb
Cons:
  • No minimum shutter speed setting for auto
  • "Format Card" buried too deep in the menus
