Fujifilm X-E1 Review

With many of the same features as the X-Pro1, but more affordable, is this the perfect enthusiast CSC? We find out in the What Digital Camera Fujifilm X-E1 review

Stunning image quality; premium finish and design; excellent EVF; no-nonsense handling

AF performance could still be better; rear screen not up to rivals standard

Fujifilm X-E1 Review

The Fujifilm X-E1 is the second mirrorless camera from Fujifilm after the Fujifilm X-Pro1 was launched earlier this year. The X-E1 is a more compact model, with an electronic viewfinder instead of the optical/electronic hybrid in the X-Pro1, and sees the introduction of a new 18-55mm lens with...

Brighter than normal kit lens (f2.8 - f/4; Impressive noise performance up to ISO6400; Impressive colour reproduction; Great build quality and handling; Film simulation modes; High resolution EVF; Good panoramics

Indoor white balance could be better; Expensive lenses / price of kit; Kit lens could be wider; Exposure compensation dial easy to knock

Fujifilm X-E1

Over the past couple of years Fujifilm's premium quality ‘X' range has elevated the brand no end in the eyes of enthusiast photographers. The first model in the series – the X100 – combined retro rangefinder looks with a cutting edge ‘hybrid' viewfinder to great effect, and this was soon followed by...

Fuji X-E1 Review: Wonderful For Stills, But It's No Jack Of All Trades

The Fuji X-Pro1 was a hit. But at $1700 for the body alone, it was (and still is) bonkers expensive. The new X-E1 is Fuji's reaction to that. With a pared down body and new kit lens, Fuji could maintain its enthusiast appeal - and attract a broader market.

Not perfect, but not many better.

I bought the X-E1 because I can't stand using the rear LCD of digital cameras, I need to look through the finder to feel connected. I also wanted something small as I found I didn't use my SLR very often any more because of size.

A bit slow to focus; a bit slow with buit in flash; sometimes picks too slow a shutter speed in aperture priority with auto ISO

As an avid traveller and amateur portraitist, I wanted a small camera with an APSC sensor and outstanding image quality. This new Fuji delivers in spades. STRENGTHS : 1) resolution equal to full frame DSLR.

Fujifilm X-E1 review

It came as no surprise that on the back of the success Fujifilm had with its fashionable rangefinder-style FinePix X100, the company should announce what is effectively an interchangeable-lens version in the form of the X-Pro1. What is perhaps surprising is just how good the newer model is.

Great back-up to a full size DSLR

Fuji have really carved a niche for themselves with the X Series - and the X-E1 is a brilliant addition. I wanted a smaller camera for travel and family events use as I found lugging my Canon 7D and lenses around a bit of a chore. The image quality and dynamic range in the JPEGS, never mind the RAW...

Fujifilm X-E1

Fujifilm is expanding its range of compacts with large-format sensors with the X-E1. While Fuji's X-Pro1 advanced compact is a practically pro-level camera, this more accessible model has a similar feel to the X100 but with the...

Impeccable image quality up to 3200 ISO; and still excellent at 6400 ISO; Top-quality 18-55 mm zoom lens (build and performances; Camera build and finish; pleasant to handle; Relatively precise and nicely defined viewfinder; Plenty of advanced controls and settings

No swivel screen / Some buttons and thumb wheel feel a bit plasticky; Some strange handling features (dense menus; thumb wheel could be more useful; Autofocus still isn't on par with competitors; particularly in low light and in video mode

Fujifilm X-E1 review

The 16.3 effective megapixel, 1920x1080 pixels Full HD video shooting Fujifilm X-E1 competes directly with the Olympus OM-D E-M5 in the retro styled compact camera system stakes.

Retro styling; Less daunting than the X-Pro1; Lovely image results

A pricey step up; Screen isn't angle adjustable; AF could be quicker
