Fitbit Alta HR
The hardest thing to predict about a fitness tracker when you buy it is how long you'll actually use it. Many buyers leave theirs to be forgotten in a bedside table after a few months of use.
Pros:
- Slim
- comfortable design
- Accurate heart-rate monitor
- Excellent auto-recognition and recording of activities
- Sleep Stages and Sleep Insights are important improvements to overall sleep data
- Great battery life
Cons:
- No connected GPS
- Not easy to see heart rate during a workout (unless heart rate is your default screen)
- Nighttime heart-rate data and Sleep Stages separated on two different graphs
- Doesn't integrate with Apple's HealthKit

All Images: Alex Cranz/Gizmodo Let's face it, the world of fitness trackers has sort of plateaued . Most people who want a fitness tracker already have one, and more than a few of us have old trackers shoved away in a drawer, useless because the charging cable mysteriously disappeared, or because...

Fitbit Alta HR
The Fitbit Alta is about as chic as fitness trackers come. And the equally chic Alta HR ($149.95) adds continuous heart rate monitoring and better sleep tracking to the mix in order to close the gap between it and Fitbit's more hard-core offerings.
Pros:
- Long battery life
- More in-depth sleep tracking and insights over its predecessor
- Accurate heart rate and step count readings
- Slim and comfortable to wear 24/7 with plenty of band options
Cons:
- Screen is occasionally unresponsive
- Buckle feels a bit flimsy
- No altimeter
- Lacks GPS

Fitbit Alta HR review: Fitbit's new king of the hill
Long battery life and stylish design combined with improving app software make the Alta HR the best all-around fitness tracker for most people. Guess what: Fitbit's newest tracker is its best one yet. There are a lot of Fitbits to choose from, but after wearing all of them, the Fitbit Alta HR ($194 at Amazon) wins our vote. It has almost all of the same features as the Charge 2 ($170 at Amazon), our old favorite tracker, but in a design that is 25 percent slimmer with better battery life. The Alta HR has continuous heart-rate, basic phone notifications, and after wearing it for weeks it's proven to be a great fitness ($43 at Amazon) companion.
Pros:
- The Alta HR has a slim and stylish design with 7-day battery life
- and all-day fitness and heart rate tracking.
Cons:
- It isn't water-resistant, and notifications can be difficult to read
- You can't manually start workouts
- Automatic exercise tracking and no buttons means no on-band controls.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: The best activity tracker is the one you'll actually wear every day, otherwise there's no point in buying one at all. Fitbit's new $150 Alta HR is the one most people would wear not just every day, but all night-and that's worth every penny.

Fitbit Alta HR review
The Alta HR is Fitbit's most stylish heart-rate tracker to date. It lacks an altimeter for stair and hill climbing stats, but its 24/7 heart-rate monitor will help you get fitter, lose weight, and better monitor your sleep.

"Getting a bit fitter"
In my youth I was a bit of a fitness fanatic, playing some sort of sport almost every day of the week from memory. This was partly because the Sega Megadrive did not have the immersive quality of the modern day 'social' consoles but also because my parents really encouraged me to keep active.
Pros:
- Great motivation
- good value
- great App
Cons:
- Other products have more functions
