Xbox One FIFA 21 EAXB17122911 review

FIFA 20 felt like it took some strides forward with new game options, such as the introduction of its subtle FIFA Street successor, VOLTA, and new added modes to the House Rules options, such as Mystery Ball.

Crossing actually works; Scoring goals still feels great; No VAR;

Defending still an afterthought; No discernible graphical improvement; Tariq Lamptey only rated 66;

FIFA 21 review

Some people think that the only thing that changes with each new FIFA iteration is the kits. Dedicated players know that’s not the case, but there’s more truth to it this year than usual. With new consoles just around the corner, this version of the game was always going to feel like a bit of a stop-gap, and you suspect the bigger changes will come with its next-gen debut. Fortunately, if you buy FIFA 21 now you’ll be able to upgrade for free when that’s available. Of course, not everyone will be forking out for a PS5 or Series X straight away though. If you normally wonder whether you really need to buy the latest version, you won’t miss much by sticking to FIFA 20. For keener players looking to fill the gap between now and next-gen FIFA 21, it’s still the closest you’ll get to living out your dream of Grimsby Town winning the Premier League.

FIFA 21 review: A graceful transition to next-gen

As we come to end of one console generation and enter another, it was never likely that FIFA 21 would represent a big seachange in the series. However, its numerous tweaks and enhancements bring enough to the party to make this the best footy game around. Again.

Ultimate Team continues to be the best online multiplayer mode around; Presentation is at its traditional best; The new stadium customisation options are great additions; Career mode has improved; On-pitch gameplay is better than ever;

Graphics are starting to show their age (on current-gen machines); FIFA Points and paid-for packs still err on the unsavoury side;

Xbox One FIFA 21 EAXB17122911 review

Like many of the sports games I’ve reviewed this year, FIFA 21 is a very small step forward for the franchise. The on-pitch action has never been better and although I think career mode could use a lot more love and attention, the moment-to-moment gameplay is still as compelling as ever.

Xbox One FIFA 21 EAXB17122911 review

The moment-to-moment action may be better than last year's game, but this is nothing more than a glorified roster update. Only Career Mode fans have reason to celebrate.

Career Mode is decent finally; Attacking gameplay is fluid and creative

FUT isn't friendly for casual players; No substantial Pro Clubs improvements; Constant performance issues and frame rate drops

FIFA 21 Review

FIFA 21 is an often great football game packed with content and modes. The few gameplay tweaks that are here make for a better overall experience and keeping Volta around adds some variety. Sadly, the redesign of career mode focuses on the wrong features and feels like a wannabe Football Manager without any of the depth.

So many modes to play; Volta remains fun and a good alternative to the traditional matches; Minor gameplay tweaks do help the game play better; Free next-gen upgrade; Heading is far improved;

Career mode update focuses on the wrong things; Very minor update overall;
