Estee Lauder Companies is a popular manufacturer and marketer of a variety of different types of beauty and hygiene products. They create skincare products, cosmetics, hair care products, and a number of different fragrances. Their current headquarters are in New York City.
The Company's History
The Estee Lauder company has been around since 1946 when Estee Lauder and her husband started to create a line of cosmetic products. They were making their products in NYC, and in the beginning, they had only a handful of different items available. The first products to roll out of the company included skin lotion, cleansing oil, and two different types of creme. They proved to be very popular early on, and within two years, they were able to open their first account with a department store - Saks Fifth Avenue. They continued to grow their business, as well as their product line, over the course of the next fifteen years. It was in 1960 that they were able to get an international account. They started to work with Harrods in London, and in 1961, they opened an office in Hong Kong.
The business was going so well that they started a subdivision called Aramis. This division made fragrances and grooming products aimed specifically at men, which was a departure from what Estee Lauder was doing. Estee Lauder, the woman, was doing well professionally. She received a number of honors, including being named one of only ten Outstanding Women in Business in 1967. She also received the Spirit of Achievement Award that year. 1967 turned out to be a truly banner year for the company, as that was the same year they launched the Clinique line, a brand of cosmetics dedicated to those women who had allergies and skincare problems. The line soon branched out to include a sub line for men. In 1976, this line, Skin Supplies for Men, launched.
Down through the years, the company has worked with a number of models and celebrities who helped to represent and market the brand. Some of the most popular of those celebrities include the likes of Paulina Porizkova, Bruce Boxleitner, Elizabeth Hurley, and Gwyneth Paltrow.
The company is certainly popular in the United States, but they really have taken the entire world by storm. Countries all around the globe know and use the products. As a matter of fact, the products from Estee Lauder were actually available in the Soviet Union in 1989.
The company has had a number of brands under its banner over the years. Some of those many brands include American Beauty, Aveda, Coach, Donna Karan, M-A-C, Michael Kors, Origins, Tommy Hilfiger, and Tom Ford.
The company has been doing very well, and they've never really had to face many of the struggles that other companies have faced over the years. This shows the brand's staying power and the loyalty of their customers. At the end of the 2013 fiscal years, it showed that they had sales that were greater than $10 billion. Evelyn Lauder, daughter-in-law of Estee Lauder, launched the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign in 1992. She, along with SELF Magazine, actually created the pink ribbon idea that everyone today associates with breast cancer awareness and breast health. This has been an important issue that the company has donated to substantially over the years. Between 1993 and 2003, they raised more than $10 million, with an additional million made from their retail outlets between 2002 and 2003.
