Dragon Quest Builders is one of those bizarre games that tries to marry one genre with another. In this case, it's the RPG-like qualities of the Dragon Quest series being married to block-based, world-constructing, survival qualities of a game like Minecraft.

Having spent plenty of time questing, building and defending its virtual settlements on myriad other platforms - including fellow portable, PlayStation Vita - Dragon Quest Builders has finally brought its masonry wares to Nintendo Switch.

Dragon Quest Builders was a sleeper hit when it launched on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita back in 2016, blending ideas seen in open-world builder games like Minecraft with traditional quest devices seen in the mainline Dragon Quest games.

Dragon Quest Builders has to be one of my favourite building games in a few years. I reviewed the PS4 version back in 2016 and the Switch version is out in a few days time bringing the experience to a portable console.

I admit I'm not a hardcore Minecraft fan. I enjoy playing that 3D pixel block-crafting series but am not the kind of person who spends hours creating exquisite masterpieces. Picked up this game about a month ago after playing the demo. I thought it would be a childish minecraft spoof but its not. This game makes u think, makes build things fun and most importantly bulding with purpose.. if u want to keep monsters out of your town during the day or night.

Since it's impossible to talk about Dragon Quest Builders without referencing Minecraft in some way, let us start early on by saying that there are indeed similarities, because Dragon Quest Builders is a title that pays tribute Mojang's game in a lot of ways.
