You should absolutely play Awakened if you've already beaten Dead Space 3. It's one of the more original and memorable parts of Isaac's story… which says as much about Dead Space 3 as a game as it does the quality of this DLC.

The story is neither suspenseful nor climatic like the previous versions of the game. Instead, you go from area to area unlocking doors and solving mindless puzzles. The biggest con I have all are the glitches where you get to certain episode further in the game; it just freezes and will not allow...

So, anyone who's been following along for any period of time may remember this, but back when Dead Space 2: Severed came out, my observation at the time was thus: Dead Space 2 was a very good game, but Dead Space 2: Severed was not a very good piece of DLC for the game.

With an unsatisfying story and rehashed gameplay, Dead Space 3: Awakened makes a strong case for letting sleeping dogs lie.

New cultist enemies are super creepy

Mostly recycled environments; Brief; unsatisfying story; No new gameplay outside a single boss fight

The survival-horror genre gets such a bad rap these days that it's tempting to overlook them for games with a frantic gunplay, co-op multiplayer elements, customizable weapons or … wait, that's actually what Dead Space 3 offers.

It's a difficult balancing act for a work of horror to capture the grotesque without also becoming so. Dead Space 3 has nearly become the grotesque, a flashy and bloated genre piece.

Familiarity doesn't have to breed contempt, but it still makes for barren soil where horror is concerned. In fact, it's a cruel irony that the genre most damaged by repetition is the one that spawns the most sequels.
