It's 2017, and this is a review for DOOM on the Nintendo Switch. Even after having completed the 8-to-10 hour campaign, spending a few more hours in multiplayer and having tried out arcade mode, it still feels unreal. After 20 years, id's magnum opus is back on a Nintendo console.

Back in March when the Switch was first released, Nintendo made it clear that it wanted the new console – unlike the failed Wii U – to be for "serious" gamers as well as casual ones . That meant full, authentic ports of the biggest games that played just like they did on the PS4 and Xbox One.

Even though it's a little fuzzy, smashing through a legion of demons with a fun set of weapons and upgrades feels great, and especially when you throw in arcade mode...

Doom is, at core, a classic first person shooter with satisfying weapons and lots of ways to kill and dismember a legion of demonic enemies from another dimension. Not since 1997's Doom 64 has a Doom title seen the light of day on a Nintendo console. Now, in an era where Nintendo has lost much of its hardcore appeal in favour of a family-friendly appearance, such a partnership seems a bit bizarre.
