D-Link Xtreme N Storage Router DIR-685

We were happy with the DIR-685's wireless performance but disappointed with network storage performance. The router's wireless performance was among the fastest single-band Wireless-N routers we've reviewed.

Fast wireless performance; Built-in network storage; Photo frame; A comprehensive set of networking features; Its web interface is responsive and intuitive

Single-band router that's more expensive than most; if not all; true dual-band routers; Front panel LCD/photo frame is too small; Network storage performance is slow; Doesn't include a hard drive

D-Link Xtreme N Storage Router DIR-685

The D-Link Xtreme N Storage Router DIR-685 is a very good single-band Wireless-N router; however, its extra features hardly justify the price.

D-Link Xtreme N Storage Router DIR-685

First announced at CES 2009, D-Link's Xtreme N Storage "all-in-one" Router DIR-685 is the first wireless router that can also work as a network storage device and as a digital photo frame. However, we wish it were a $150 cheaper standalone router, as its $300 asking price is too high.

1 problem developed

After 6-7 months it began rebooting itself several times a day. At inconvenient times of course. It has the latest firmware and I never used a hard drive in it. I tried the tip in the knowledge base about turning off upnp but it didn't help.

All the features; Works great when it stays on

Sending it in for warranty leaves you without a unit; Going to see if they'll ship a refurbished one but not holding my breath

Smashed Mash-up: D-Link DIR-685 Reviewed

It's not uncommon to find networking manufacturers adding unique features to their products in an effort to stand out from the crowd. The Linksys by Cisco WRT160NL , Belkin's N+ as well as D-Link's DIR-825 all include USB ports to convert an attached USB drive to networked storage.

Gigabit WAN and LAN w/ jumbo frame support; Wire-speed Gigabit routing; Wireless Guest zone; NAS performs better and has more features than other router NASes

Fan screams like a banshee; Screen too small; FrameChannel won't work behind another router; Membrane switch failed on review sample

D-Link Xtreme N DIR-685

Review Ah, convergence, that buzzword of the 1990s – so often promising a lot, but delivering little. Evidently, D-Link is toying with the convergence concept with the neatly packaged Xtreme N DIR-685.
