The flagship HF G10 put up impressive numbers in low light performance-without much of a penalty to sharpness. For just $699.99 (MSRP), you can get virtually the same stellar performance in the Canon Vixia HF M40.

This is a great camera, no doubt about it. I think this is the best entry level camera for everyone that wants to get into the video world. Pros -The screen is amazing -The quality is great Cons -No manual focus -AVCHD is a pain.
I have had alot of camcorders over the years and this is by far the best. The low light preformance cant be beat. It uses the same sensor that is in Canons professional camcorders. The same as the HF G10. I bought mine from another etailer..
This thing is a beast; The best low light preformance I have ever seen; It has a ton of manual controls along with a 6 bladed iris; Tons of shooting modes

Sometimes less is more. Take, for example, the Canon Vixia HF M40 camcorder. The camera tweaks some features found in Canon's 2010 M-series camcorders , but the most significant change is a slightly larger image sensor with substantially fewer pixels.
The Canon Legria M40 should please most home movie-oriented videographers despite its relatively high price. If you don't need an electronic viewfinder, the M40 is a good buy.
Nice set of features; Pleasing video quality; Solid design
Small, coarse LCD hard to view in direct sunlight; Touchscreen-impaired menu system
