Canon PowerShot SX740 HS

The pocket-sized Canon Powershot SX740 HS is perfect for travellers, or anyone on the move, thanks to its compact, portable design and ability to capture truly great stills and video.

Perfectly portable

The Canon Powershot SX740 HS is not at all big or heavy. Just 110.1 mm high, 63.8 mm wide and 39.9 mm deep…and a tick under 300 grams including battery and memory card. Now that is portable!

Big on performance

Small in nature but big in the quality it delivers, this compact camera is all you need thanks to 40x optical zoom, superfast DIGIC processing and 4K resolution. Capture everything in 20.3MP detail without carrying a heavy and cumbersome camera to do it.

Point and shoot

Getting great shots is made easy with that DIGIC 8 processor. Think of it as your photographic adviser as it manages camera settings, including Zoom Framing Assist and Hybrid Auto, so you can achieve spectacular results even when you just point and shoot.

You won't miss a thing

All that quality is nothing if you don't capture the moment. Fortunately, the Canon Powershot SX740 HS has supremely responsive shutter release and 10 fps continuous shooting.

Super selfies

Leave the phone in your pocket and grab the perfect selfie with the snappy Self Portrait mode and a flip up LCD screen.

Easy to share

It's easy to take great photos, and just as easy to share them with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi connectivity and auto transfer. This makes it a piece of cake to share and back-up photos to compatible smart devices or your home PC.

Canon PowerShot SX740 review

If you’re looking for an easy-to-use, pocket-sized travel compact and your main consideration is the zoom ratio, then the Canon SX740 is a great choice. It’s also not too damaging on the old bank balance, coming in at around £350. By contrast, the other compact cameras, like the Panasonic Lumix TZ200 or the Sony RX100 VI, which tend to be marketed towards travel and family type users, are much more expensive and have a much more restricted zoom (but have a larger sensor, raw format shooting, touchscreens and so on). It’s clear that the SX740 represents a compromise – as pretty much all compact cameras do these days. Whether it’s the one you want is largely down to personal preference, but it’s certainly worth thinking about packing it in your suitcase.

40x optical zoom; Good image quality in good light; Easy to use; Well priced;

No touchscreen; Raw shooting not supported; Smaller sensor means iffy low-light performance;

Disappointing - maybe I expected too much

Was hoping to use the camera when out and about and not wanting to carry any bag, just pop it in a pocket. Also wanting the reach of that long lens. I knew the quality at the long end might be compromised but found that all images, even wide angle were overly sharpened, full of artifacts and just...

Lightweight; Simple Controls

Poor image quality

Canon PowerShot SX740 HS

Canon's latest travel zoom compact camera offers a 40x optical zoom in a body that'll snugly fit in your pocket. In 35mm terms, that's 24-960mm, giving you a huge amount of flexibility when it comes to snapping distant subjects.

40x optical zoom makes it versatile; Generally accurate autofocus; Good photo quality in daytime; Shoots 4K video at 30fps

Small sensor restricts low light performance; No option to shoot in Raw; Screen isn't touch-sensitive
