Canon PowerShot SX740 HS

The pocket-sized Canon Powershot SX740 HS is perfect for travellers, or anyone on the move, thanks to its compact, portable design and ability to capture truly great stills and video.

Perfectly portable

The Canon Powershot SX740 HS is not at all big or heavy. Just 110.1 mm high, 63.8 mm wide and 39.9 mm deep…and a tick under 300 grams including battery and memory card. Now that is portable!

Big on performance

Small in nature but big in the quality it delivers, this compact camera is all you need thanks to 40x optical zoom, superfast DIGIC processing and 4K resolution. Capture everything in 20.3MP detail without carrying a heavy and cumbersome camera to do it.

Point and shoot

Getting great shots is made easy with that DIGIC 8 processor. Think of it as your photographic adviser as it manages camera settings, including Zoom Framing Assist and Hybrid Auto, so you can achieve spectacular results even when you just point and shoot.

You won't miss a thing

All that quality is nothing if you don't capture the moment. Fortunately, the Canon Powershot SX740 HS has supremely responsive shutter release and 10 fps continuous shooting.

Super selfies

Leave the phone in your pocket and grab the perfect selfie with the snappy Self Portrait mode and a flip up LCD screen.

Easy to share

It's easy to take great photos, and just as easy to share them with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi connectivity and auto transfer. This makes it a piece of cake to share and back-up photos to compatible smart devices or your home PC.

Canon PowerShot SX740 HS review

The SX740 HS makes some positive steps forward from the SX730 HS, and is capable of producing nice images and good-looking videos. It's a sound option for those who just want the camera to do all the work, although the absence of a viewfinder, touchscreen and raw shooting mode means it can't be said to offer especially good value for money compared to rivals.

Huge, stabilized zoom lens; EOS-style user interface; Images show nice colors; 4K video reasonably detailed; Fast autofocus system; Good face detection AF;

No EVF; Screen not touch-sensitive; Image quality compromised at longer focal lengths; Effects of noise reduction and over-sharpening are visible; No raw shooting; Limited image quality control

Great Camera for Hiking Trips

This small camera has a great zoom lens and lots of features. I would have given it a 5 star but the main negative I have found is the delay in focus when you zoom in on an object.

Another great Canon P&S

I have been using Canon since the early 80's, so I am biased towards them. This camera has improved on earlier P&S models with a dedicated network button. It is so much easier now to transfers photo's to your computer or whatever. The 40x zoom really needs a mono-pod at the least to keep it steady.

Great zoom and picture quality. Poor build and con

I am a smart phone camera user and I wanted to take a step up, take better quality photos. I was drawn to the SX740 because of the 40 X zoom and the 7.6 frames per second still shooting. Having had a chance to try the camera out I am impressed with the picture quality.

Canon PowerShot SX740 HS Review: Versatile Pocket Shooter

The compact mega-zoom Canon SX740 HS (24-960mm) offers a good balance of simplicity and ease of use, along with multiple exposure controls and an extremely versatile zoom lens that will help expand your picture-taking capabilities.

Image-stabilized 40x zoom; Pocket size; Auto and Manual exposure controls; 180-degree tilting LCD; 4K video

No viewfinder; No touch screen; Limited ISO/low-light performance; No Raw

Some Unusual Features

One of the main reasons that I bought this camera was its Manual Focus feature. Unfortunately I have not yet figured-out how to effectively use the Manual Focus. With my limited experience with the camera, I usually give-up on Manual Focus and let the camera do the focusing.

Amazing build quality and photos

I've spent over a month with this camera now and having never owned a dedicated camera I would never go back to using a phone. The photo quality is amazing with vivid colours and sharp detail. It has a brilliant zoom lense that really lets you get in close.
