Superb zoom

This camera provides amazing zooming [30x optical] and that too around 14k. On rest of the aspects it gives a good fight to its peers/competitors. Sometimes during micro-focus, low-light images and focusing with near-aperture settings it gives some disappointment, but anyway that grief can be...

Love the Zoom

This camera has a lot of great features and some that are not so great. The zoom is awsome. I was able to take a picture of a bald eagle that was sitting high on a power tower. It was clear, sharp and it looked like he was sitting right in front of me. Outdoor pictures are beautiful.

Very Pleased

Very pleased with the purchase. I was looking for a point and shoot with a decent zoom and this camera fits the bill. An added bonus is the camera size as it fits in a coat pocket for easy carry, unlike the bulkier SLR model cameras.

Nice features/settings; excellent image quality; Lightweight/Portable; Simple controls/menu; easy to use

no printed manual

The SX500 is still a chunky model, measuring almost 5 inches in thickness when the lens is fully extended. But unlike most large zoom fixed-lens models, you shouldn't have much of a problem operating this camera one-handed.

Nice to find 30x zoom in such a lightweight camera; Lens moves quickly through its zoom range in still image mode; Good mix of manual and automatic shooting controls; Popup flash gives better performance than many built-in flash units; Mode dial makes it easy to pick shooting modes; Images look OK...

Camera has a cheap feel to it because of all of the lightweight plastic in the design; Images have quite a bit of noise when printed at large sizes; Shot to shot delays are very poor; especially when using the flash; Shutter lag should be better when the lens is at its widest angle setting; Burst...

Canon is a fantastix and excellent product

I've been a Canon fanatic for years I can't do without Canon. All of my little gadgets to name: Scanner, Printer and most of all Camera, were all Canon. If there is a Computer, Tablet or Mobile Phone that is Canon, I'll buy it.

Reliable; Durable; Superior build quality; Easy to use

Canon SX500IS

I have had this camera since the middle of December 2012. I bought it as a tag along camera for use on quick walks and when carrying a bag with equipment is not desirable. My first choice would have been the Canon G12 or Nikon equivalent, however the price points on these were more than I cared to...

Canon PowerShot SX500 IS review: Small, light budget camera with big zoom

The most amazing thing about the PowerShot SX500 IS is that Canon managed to make a 30x 24-720mm lens, attach it to a body, and have it only be 4 inches deep and weigh 12 ounces -- with its battery.

It has its limitations, but the Canon PowerShot SX500 IS is a good choice for zoom addicts on a budget.

The Canon PowerShot SX500 IS holds an ultrawide-angle 30x zoom lens in a very small, very light body; It offers more shooting options -- including semimanual and manual controls -- than most in its class, and has very good optical image stabilization.

Despite autofocus improvements, the SX500 IS' shooting performance might still be too slow for action shots, especially indoors; It's not a great choice for handheld low-light shots.
