A1! Huge camera performance in a small, affordable package, recommend it.

We were tossing up between this camera and a Sony to replace our Nikon and partner our Lumix. We chose this camera because of the huge zoom and range of lens settings it was capable of. The picture quality is superb, the zoom makes even the most distant animal seem upclose and personal.

You may forgive Canon for being a little camera-crazy over the past couple of months or so, with the launch of a variety of cameras ranging from ones for amateurs, pros and even videographers. This time around, we're looking at another of their point and shooters, the Canon PowerShot SX50 HS.
Pros:
  • 50x zoom
  • Great outdoor images
  • Robust features and scenes
Cons:
  • Poor low-light images
  • Pictures get blurry easily at tail end of zoom

Canon PowerShot SX50 HS Digital Camera

I have used the earlier PowerShot model (SX10IS) and find this one with a greater zoom range & slightly better light sensing capabilities (in low light & bright to dark) to be a very flexible, good sized camera indeed.

Canon PowerShot SX50 HS

It's hard to ignore the Canon PowerShot's SX50 HS's 50x optical zoom. Never before has a superzoom laid a 24-1200mm equivalent lens on the features table - something that, in terms of maximum focal length, leaves all other superzooms in the shade.
Pros:
  • Raw shooting
  • decent optical image stabilisation system
  • vari-angle LCD
  • among the best superzoom image quality at lower ISO settings
  • close-up macro mode
Cons:
  • Chromatic aberrations
  • limited maximum aperture at longer focal lengths (and less bright than predecessor)
  • auto-area focus can decide to focus on some strange areas
  • small viewfinder
  • shorter battery life than predecessor
  • stabilisation struggles at longest focal lengths

In that mid-price range of around $500, though, the market is seeing a convergence of cameras. You'll find beginner-level DSLRs and other interchangeable lens cameras (ILC) here, as well as advanced fixed-lens cameras with large image sensors.
Pros:
  • 50x optical zoom is a great feature
  • Zoom motor works fast
  • going from wide angle to full telephoto
  • Popup flash provides good low light results
  • Hot shoe also allows you to add an external flash if needed
  • SX50 works well in fully automatic mode
  • Camera is also a strong performer in manual and...
Cons:
  • SX50 has smaller image sensor than what's expected in this price range
  • SX50's response times are a bit choppy
  • depending on scene
  • You'll see "busy" on the screen more than you should between shots
  • LCD screen is a little small
  • Sharpness and image quality in EVF could be better
  • SX50 doesn't...

Canon PowerShot SX50 HS Review

Shooting extreme close-ups of subjects requires a good super-zoom lens, especially when it comes to wildlife and architecture. A DSLR with a super telephoto lens (the ones you see in sports photography during matches) would be any photographer's dream.

Great camera

Love the quality of pictures and the super zoom. Very nice that this is also a wide angle camera. Overall a very good buy for the price. There is only one thing that really annoys me and that is the location of the function knob.

Canon PowerShot SX50 HS Review: Goldilocks Dream Camera

I loved Canon's S-series ultrazoom digital cameras (S1-S5) and I was a bit suspicious of the SX-series that replaced them. But, after using each of the SX models, to date, I've come to regard the SX-series as worthy successors to the benchmark "S" cameras.
Pros:
  • 50x zoom
  • HD (1080p) movie mode
  • Great image quality
  • Easy to use
Cons:
  • Soft telephoto images at full zoom
  • AF hunts at telephoto lengths

Canon PowerShot SX50 HS review

Ultra-zoom cameras are incredibly versatile, taking wide-angle, telephoto and macro photography in their stride. The best models cope well in low light too. Last year's Canon SX40 HS led the field for image quality, particularly in low light, but narrowly missed out on an award because of its...
