Canon PowerShot SX210 IS

A year after releasing the PowerShot SX200 IS, Canon has upped the ante with the SX210 IS. Resolution is boosted to 14 megapixels and the zoom lens range is extended from 12x to 14x, but kept its 28mm equivalent wide angle of view. The new camera is offered in black or purple.

Overall the Canon PowerShot SX210 IS is a versatile camera offering the advantages of a wide zoom range in a compact body. The shooting options presented are equally wide ranging, from the Easy Mode which is ideal for children, through Smart Auto, right over to Manual control.

The first few months of the year are always an interesting time in the camera industry, with all of the major manufacturers launching their new Spring models. Competition is fierce, and no more so than in the popular long-zoom compact sector of the market.

Canon PowerShot SX210 review

Canon's PowerShot range can be confusing. Unlike the Ixus range, which is a fairly tight grouping of mid-range compacts, a PowerShot can be anything from the A490 (now down to just £80 and no worse for it) to the breath-taking DSLR-threatening Canon G11 , which costs nearly £400.

UPDATE 07/07/2011: In line with our new, tighter test criteria, the SX210 now gets four stars in the 'Picture Quality' section rather than five.

  • Electronic noise handled well up to 800 ISO
  • Well made
  • Good quality LCD screen in spite of low definition

  • Low battery life (in our model at least
  • Annoying pop-up flash and disappointing burst mode
  • No exposure histogram in shooting mode

Canon Powershot SX210 IS Review – Zoooom!

Conclusion: The Canon Powershot SX210 IS has an impressive zoom range, one of the longest reaches available at 14x optical zoom – zooming all the way to the equivalent of 392mm – normally this level of optical zoom comes in the form of an SLR-style ultra zoom.
