Canon PowerShot S120

The Canon PowerShot S120 is a pocket camera aimed at the demands of enthusiasts; indeed it remains one of the smallest cameras around with a bright lens, full manual control and support for RAW files.

More S120s could be bundled into this case!

It's too soon to review the camera but a few words about the bundle might be helpful. The spare battery in my bundle is Vivitar and the SDHC card is from Toshiba (Class 10). The screen protector wasn't great so I abandoned it.

Canon PowerShot S120 review

Like Sony with its newest cameras for 2014, Canon is also focusing on speed when it comes to its latest device. It's claiming a new Digic 6 processor makes the 12.1 megapixel, 5x optical zoom Canon PowerShot S120 compact some 50% faster than its S110 predecessor.

Solid feel high quality construction despite the pocket proportions; touch screen control; customisable lens ring function will appeal to those who love getting hands on with camera operation

The asking price here would alternatively buy a cheap DSLR; lacks a handgrip; omits an eye level viewfinder

Canon Powershot S120 review

When compacts were for dummies and DSLRs for pros, "serious" compacts in the vein of the Canon S120 and Sony RX100 made a lot of sense. Now, flanked by fantastic do-it-all compacts such as the Sony HX50 on one side and far more flexible compact system cameras on the other, their niche is squeezed...

Slim; Cool special modes; RAW shooting; Solid build; Excellent picture quality; Great image stabilisation; Smooth; sharp video at 60fps

5x zoom is limiting; Unfriendly interface; Poor Wi-Fi integration; Questionable battery life

Canon S120

Advanced compacts were once mostly large and bulky and, while offering improved level of image quality upon standard compacts, weren't particularly easy on the eye. Recent technological advancements have, however, allowed for such models to be shrunk down to a more pocketable and portable size, and...

Good handling; Excellent image quality; Fast and easy to use; Outstanding build quality

Somewhat overpriced currently; So-so battery life

Canon PowerShot S120 review: Little camera with a nice, big sensor that delivers

You'll find many compact cameras that also have a wide range of DSLR-like features. While the PowerShot S120 isn't as feature-filled as those cameras, its emphasis is on portability and image quality, and there is little about the PowerShot S120 that's found wanting in those two areas.

Solid feel; high quality construction; Touch screen control; Customizable lens ring function

No handgrip; No eye level viewfinder
