Canon PowerShot G5X review

Canon's PowerShot G5X is one of the most capable compacts around, delivering much of the experience of a larger camera in a smaller, lighter and often cheaper form factor. The really clever part is it's essentially based on the best-selling PowerShot G7X, but enhances it in a number of key respects...

Large and detailed built-in viewfinder; Fully-articulated screen with great touch interface; 1in sensor delivers a good balance of quality vs size; Flexible 24-100mm f1.8-2.8 zoom with 5cm macro; Built-in Wifi with NFC and good smartphone app; Three control dials and a fourth for exposure...

Larger and less pocketable than rival models; No 4k video; nor 1080p above 60p; No panorama stitching mode

Canon G5X

The Canon G5X proves to be a more user-friendly and enhanced version of the G7X. With many more controls, a vari-angle LCD, an OLED viewfinder, a flash hot shoe, and additional enhancements to the camera body design and layout, the G5X takes what's good about the G7X and puts it in a more...

Photographer-friendly controls; Good OLED viewfinder; Good image quality with sharp detail especially with RAW; Vari-angle touchscreen display

Only 31 autofocus points; Subpar continuous shooting performance; Soft corners at wide-angle; Flare issues and fringing shooting wide-open; No 4K video; Poor battery life

Canon PowerShot G5 X

The 1-inch sensor size has proven to be a winner in the compact camera space. Once exclusive to Sony, it's now available in models from other manufacturers. Competition is good for innovation and customer choice, and the Canon PowerShot G5 X ($799.99) certainly hits a niche.

Big 1-inch image sensor; Wide aperture zoom lens; Vari-angle touch display; EVF and hot shoe; Quick focus; Wi-Fi with NFC; Raw capture

Expensive; Burst rate slows when shooting Raw; Lacks 4K video support

Canon PowerShot G5 X a camera for photo enthusiasts

The Canon PowerShot G5 X is the bigger brother of last year's G7 X prosumer compact camera.The G5 X uses the same 20.2-megapixel 1-inch image sensor and 24-100mm f/1.8-f/2.8 lens as the G7 X.

Canon PowerShot G5 X review: Chunky but comprehensive compact

It's all change in the camera market, with the focus on throwaway compacts all but dead in the face of smartphone domination. Canon is well known for its chunky-but-capable compact cameras, with 2013's G16 seemingly representing the end of that range, now moving aside to make way for the equally...

Capable autofocus in various lighting conditions; built-in viewfinder and vari-angle screen; fast maximum aperture throughout zoom range; notable upgrade over G16

Fairly chunky build will raise questions for some; still in the shadow of the Sony RX100 III/IV due to size; high ISO can't overcome image noise

Canon PowerShot G5 X

The Canon PowerShot G5 X is an advanced compact camera, one that does its best to give you something approaching the shooting experience and image quality of a DSLR in a much smaller body.

High-quality photos; Great manual control layout; Strong JPEGs

Focusing relability falters in low light; Poor RAW shooting speeds; No 4K video

Canon Powershot G5 X review

The compact size and viewfinder make this the most appealing Canon G series camera on the market

Compact and well-built; Good all-round performance; Useful OLED viewfinder

No 4K video; Viewfinder not as good as Sony/Panasonic

A great camera for a budding photographer!

I bought this before Christmas hoping to replace my big DSLR with it. The camera was fantastic, however, it does not quite have all the features of my DSLR. It's a really great camera for those wanting a high quality image without playing around too much with settings.

Canon's new member of its PowerShot family G5 X is an advanced compact camera with the capabilities of a DSLR in a much smaller body. The Canon PowerShot G5 X has a small body which offers a comfortable grip. We find this much better than other compacts we have tested till date.

Good quality photos; several manual settings; rotatable screen

lacks in focusing in low light; no 4K video support
